商品の説明

内容説明

In this second volume, Margaret Thatcher discusses the formative years of her childhod in Grantham, the values she learnt at home, the profound influence of her shop-keeping father, and of her own schooling on future Conservative education policies. She recounts her days at Oxford, her academic work as a scientist, marriage to Dennis and the beginning of her career as a politician when in 1959 she was selected to stand at Finchley. She gives her views on the governments of Harold Macmillan, Alec Douglas-Home, Harold Wilson, Edward Heath and Jim Callaghan, and sets out the development of her ideas during her time in oposition.

From the Publisher

While her internationally bestselling first volume, The Downing Street Years, covered her tenure as prime minister, this highly acclaimed second volume reflects back on Margaret Thatcher's life before her monumental election in 1979. Here are the impulses, events, and influences that led her from Grantham to London, from being a grocer's daughter to a woman of indomitable character who dominated the stage of world affairs for more than a decade.

In her own words, Lady Thatcher recounts her modest but solid upbringing, the afternoons she spent as a teenager arguing politics at the Grantham fish and chip shop, her first attempts at running for office, her courtship with and marriage to Denis Thatcher, and her appointment as Leader of the Opposition. Written with wit, intellect, and passion, this riveting memoir provides insight into the making of one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century.

Following international bestseller The Downing Street Years, this one tells Lady Thatcher's life story, from birth, to her education and entry into politics.

Rich in anecdotes, and detailed accounts of what influenced what she strongly believes in, which itself defined Thatcherism and Britain during her term, and in many ways, after it as well. Tells about her family's life in their town, the events of the times and the people she met along the way, all of which influenced her.

Excellent in its structure--never verbose, but providing enough descriptive detail to form a picture in mind as one reads. The photos over the years are a delight as well.

The Iron Lady comes across as impressive, without being too intimidating (at least not as she comes across in purely-political settings).

英語(文法だけではなく、表現や文化的ニュアンスも)が得意な方向きです。
