地政学の視点から2100年までの世界情勢を大胆に予測。
2009年発売すると同時にthe best book of the monthに選ばれ、あまりにも大胆で鋭い予測から話題沸騰したそうです。
2020年、中国は政治不安、軍事力の限界、ナショナリズムといった問題から内部崩壊し、ロシアとアメリカの間には第二の冷戦が勃発。過去にもそうだったように、戦争とともにアメリカは経済的発展を遂げ、ますます覇権国としての力を強化します。
2040年頃にはアメリカ、日本、トルコが大国となり、あらゆるハイテクを駆使した宇宙戦争が始まる。月面からの攻撃、Thanks giving dayを狙った攻撃などかなりリアルな想定がSF映画を彷彿させます。そして、2100年には大国となったメキシコが米国と激しく覇権を争うというシナリオを予測。
あまりにもリアルすぎる内容に賛否両論あったそうですが、事実を冷静かつ多角的に捉えると、規則的なサイクルで人類の歴史が繰り返されているということと、そのことによって未来は予測可能になることがこの本から学べる大きなラーニングポイントなのではと思いました。
地政学という古典的手法と、あくまでもファクトをベースに立てた独特の見方やロジックの組み立ては非常に素晴らしく、ヨーロッパやイスラム諸国の歴史の見方、考え方についてはとても勉強になりました。

おおざっぱに言うと、最初の3分の2くらいは近現代史の振り返りで、残り3分の1くらいが近未来の予測のような構成になっている。
前半の部分は非常に興味深く読んだ。フリードマンの歴史観が、冷静で明確にかかれていて、ある部分目を開かされるところもあった。
その著者が予測する近未来は、どう控えめに見ても荒唐無稽のような気がする。日本がトルコと組んでアメリカ相手に宇宙戦争を起こすなんて、まるでSFの世界だ。しっくりこないので、同様の文明論や未来学の本を読みあさっている。

This is an interesting hypothesis on the coming tensions among rising powers over the next 100 years. although some major factors are glossed over or not covered at all. The author mentions that it is too hard to make predictions on such important factors as global warming and environmental change, and this takes away from his arguments. Overall, this reads more as challenges the US will face in the coming century. The author clearly shows that he has access to privileged information but states the big picture without going into great detail.
