A travelogue by Bill Bryson is as close to a sure thing as funny books get. The Lost Continent is no exception. Following an urge to rediscover his youth (he should know better), the author leaves his native Des Moines, Iowa, in a journey that takes him across 38 states. Lucky for us, he brought a notebook.
With a razor wit and a kind heart, Bryson serves up a colorful tale of boredom, kitsch, and beauty when you least expect it. Gentler elements aside, The Lost Continent is an amusing book. Here's Bryson on the women of his native state: "I will say this, however--and it's a strange, strange thing--the teenaged daughters of these fat women are always utterly delectable ... I don't know what it is that happens to them, but it must be awful to marry one of those nubile cuties knowing that there is a time bomb ticking away in her that will at some unknown date make her bloat out into something huge and grotesque, presumably all of a sudden and without much notice, like a self-inflating raft from which the pin has been yanked."

この本は著者が最初に出した本です。今でこそ半ば「旅行記ライター」と化している彼ですが、本書は旅行そのものよりも、旅行をきっかけにして子供時代の思い出や故郷に対する思いを語る、というもので、かなりのノスタルジーを漂わせています。元々イギリスで出た本のせいか、皮肉やブラックユーモアが利いています。人によってはそれを悪意と受け取ってしまい、楽しさが理解できないということがあるようですが、私にはとても楽しいものでした。著者がこの旅行をしたのは1987年の秋と1988年の春で、個人的には私もこの頃アメリカの田舎に留学していたので、その意味でもこの本で描かれていることに「そうそう！」と共感できた面もあります。
なお、この本はイギリス版とアメリカ版で少し違いがあり、アメリカ版で（叩かれる恐れがありそうな）「危ない」記述が省かれています。でも、そういう部分こそが「面白い」ので、できればアメリカ版でなくイギリス版を買うことをお薦めします。

アメリカンライフスタイルが満喫できるこの本は空想旅行家の皆様には絶対お勧めです。普通旅行者が訪れることのない、米国の田舎町（ニューヨークやグランドキャニオンも出てきますが）の風景と生活が面白おかしく紹介されています。作者の子供時代の回想としてでてくる古きよきアメリカも昔の映画を見ているようです。アメリカの生活と文化にどっぷり浸りたいときに。

I was so eager to read this book after having read 'Made In America.' I couldn't have been more disappointed. Mr. Bryson has a writing style and humor that makes him most enjoyable to read. However, somewhere between his adopted land of England and the land of his birth, Iowa, he got lost. What I thought would be a tongue-in-cheek look at travelling in America turned into a thorough bashing that seemed more aimed at reassuring Britain of its superiority over 'the colonies.' It's too bad he couldn't see the forest for the trees and chose, instead, to exploit and perpetuate inaccurate stereotypes. I'm sure he missed out on the wonderful things that the simple people of North America had to offer him. Not his cup of tea, what? By the way, I'm not an American and hold no particular desire to defend it but I was offended by the tone Mr. Bryson took for the sake of trying to get a laugh.
