This is a brief review of the reprinted edition by Orchid Press. Although this book was offered for pre-order by Amazon, it seems no longer to be available. It can be ordered directly from Orchid Press or from various sellers as shown on the Amazon site. First, you should know that several chapters of this book are available for online download through JSTOR. If you or an affiliated institution have a JSTOR subscription, you may wish to consider this option. However, the appendices, which are quite interesting, are not available through JSTOR. I downloaded, printed out, and bound the JSTOR version but still opted to buy the hard cover book because of the appendices.
The cloth hardcover binding of the reprint is quite nice. The jacket has a different image from the original (the one that now appears on Amazon) but can be viewed in a Google image search of "Lore of the Chinese Lute". It is a color reproduction of a Chinese painting showing a gentleman sitting in front of a lute on a lute table. Oddly, the painted head seems slightly too large for the image.
The pages consist of a fairly high quality, slightly glossy paper. The text and images appear to have been imaged electronically from the original and are quite legible. The main drawback is that the price is still fairly high, although not prohibitive.
