The droit de cuissage even resurfaced in the debate over the French Penal Code of 1992 as a synonym for sexual harassment.
But, as Alain Boureau elegantly demonstrates in this book, the droit de cuissage is a myth. Both the editorial review and "Braveheart" make an error about the concept of "ius primae noctis." A feudal lord never, in the folklore, was thought to have such a right in regard to one of his vassals (a lesser noble who held a fief from him, or a knight). Wallace being a noble, his bride would not have been subjected to such a custom, even if it had existed. Even in legend, this supposed "right" was limited in the popular imagination to the brides of unfree serfs.
