Starred Review. Wright, a New Yorker writer, brings exhaustive research and delightful prose to one of the best books yet on the history of terrorism. He begins with the observation that, despite an impressive record of terror and assassination, postWWarII, Islamic militants failed to establish theocracies in any Arab country. Many helped Afghanistan resist the Russian invasion of 1979 before their unemployed warriors stepped up efforts at home. Al-Qaeda, formed in Afghanistan in 1988 and led by Osama bin Laden, pursued a different agenda, blaming America for Islam's problems. Less wealthy than believed, bin Laden's talents lay in organization and PR, Wright asserts. Ten years later, bin Laden blew up U.S. embassies in Africa and the destroyer Cole, opening the floodgates of money and recruits. Wright's step-by-step description of these attacks reveals that planning terror is a sloppy business, leaving a trail of clues that, in the case of 9/11, raised many suspicions among individuals in the FBI, CIA and NSA. Wright shows that 9/11 could have been prevented if those agencies had worked together. 同時多発テロに関しては、アメリカ政府の公式報告書が出されているが、本書を読んでの第一印象はその民間版だなというもの。公式報告書より、戦後の中東でのイスラム運動が詳しく書かれていて、多発テロ部分は公式報告書よりはあっさりと書かれている点と、イスラム、米国機関の主要人物にフォーカスを当てた記述の違いはあるが。丁寧な取材を通じて書かれている事は参考文献などをみればわかるが、あくまでアメリカ人が書いた点には留意する必要がある。
但し、公式報告書のレビューでも似た様な事を書いたが、この様な内容をしっかり書こうというジャーナリズムの力強さには感心する。

On page 148, Lawrence Wright wrote Deraz (Essam Deraz, he is an Egyptian filmmaker and met bin Laden at his base named Lion's Den in 1988.) became bin Laden's first biographer. I suppose Lawrence Wright is the last biographer of bin Laden.
This book consists of many interviews and historical materials and the author explains the difficulty of materials' credibility in ACKNOWLEDGMENTS AND NOTES ON SOURCES. He also wrote there that "A full story of al-Qaeda cannot be told until they are allowed to talk." They are parties related to 9/11 including al-Qaeda prisoners in USA.
Although Japanese have little knowledge of Muslims we are carelessly tending to judge by news or comments of critics. I recommend you this book to understand history and thinking of Muslims.
