Ayla and Jondalar are now back home settling into life and meeting all the family and the surrounding camps. This book represents the culmination of all Ayla's adventures and travels to her final destination and family. As the story progresses we see the daily family life, interactions with others and what Ayla's training is like to become a Zelandoni. Through dialogue Ayla and Jondalar tell of all their adventures and discoveries during their travels and how it is that Ayla knows how to hunt, tame animals, and her knowledge of plants and people.
It incorporates stories from all of the previous books through dialogue and story-telling. All the while still telling the story of the current day lives and activities. It was a great ending to the series.
The one and only thing that I personally found hard was the repetition of all the stories. As one that has read the whole series, I know the stories. So the majority of this book was just a reminder for me of what I have already read. For those that have not read any books in the series in a long time and just want to read the ending this would be a great way to do that. For those of use that read the other books recently, you may find 50% of this book very repetitive with 50% new story line.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK if you have enjoyed the previous ones, as I did. Just let the characters "walk in the other world"....the series has run it's course.
50% of it is simply a repeat ( sometimes a repeat of a repeat ) of previous books in the series. WHY would anyone pick up book 6 without having read 1-5, and thus need all that repeat ? Smacks of plain laziness on the part of the author.
Most of the other half is tour after tour of caves and cave paintings, and Ayla becoming a priestess/medicine woman....again, repeated over and over. I get (from the postscript) the author was thoroughly enamored by visits to prehistoric caves in Europe, but to subject the reader to one cave after another without being able to actually BE in a cave, again, smacks of the author needing to fill out a book.
This is the first book of the series I had to force myself to finish, whereas the others, I couldn't put down.

If you are a fan of Auel's earth's children series--DO NOT READ THIS BOOK

I regret ever reading this book. Part I and Part II are tedious and boring and repetitious. Part III shows Ayla and Jondalar acting out of character with no plot to show how their characters (especially Jondalar) changed to justify their actions. For more details, see all the reviews of the hardback copy. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!! Just be happy with books 1-3, 4 is ok as well although the repetition starts in #4.
