とてもシンプルな表現で書かれている割に情景が鮮明に浮かびます。

主人公の少年が初めてのアルバイトを通して成長していく姿が描かれています。友達と喧嘩をしたり、幼い弟が迷子になったりといった、誰でも経験しそうな日常生活の中に戦争の影が見え隠れする話で、読んだあとも心に残るものが大きいです。

この本を知ったのはもう30年近くまえ、よんだのは15年くらい前です。アメリカに留学中、近所の図書館で借りて読みました。 たしか「人間喜劇」とかいった名前で翻訳もされていたと思いますが、ぜひ原書で読んでください。 若干の努力がいりますがその価値はあります。 中身は古き良きアメリカの時代、架空の町イサカで、ある少年のまわりにおこる様々な出来事が普通の描写で描かれています。民族紛争や、ベトナム戦争といったアメリカの黒い部分が淡々と描かれていますが、ラスト、兄の死を伝える電報のところは熱かったです。
