普通の少女ベラとバンパイアの少年エドワードのロマンスに全米の少女が憧れた「Twilight」シリーズの作者Stephenie Meyerによる初めてのSF。
他の惑星からの知的生命体が地球をひそかに侵略していた。
銀色のムカデに似たこの寄生体は、人間の脳に寄生して意識を征服する。瞳孔が光る以外は外観がまったく変わらず、しかも宿主（Host）の過去の記憶にアクセスできる異星人たちは、静かに人々と入れ替わっていたのだ。手遅れになるまで侵略に気づかずマイノリティになってしまった人類だが、地球を取り戻すために地下にもぐって抵抗を続けた者たちがいた。そのひとりMelanieは、ついに侵略者に捕まり、「Wanderer」と呼ばれるSoulのHostになった。しかし、強い意志を持つMelanieは、簡単に自分の身体を明けわたそうとはせず、Wandererを悩ませる。Melanieの記憶に残るJaredに強く惹かれ始めたWandererは、消えることを拒否するMelanieの意識とともにアリゾナの砂漠をさまよい、ついにJared、Melanieの弟、叔父たちの隠れ家を探しだす。

人間に同情を覚え愛しはじめたWandererは、自分の選択を悩む。
SFとして面白くなりそうな設定はあるのだが、ストーリーはしだいに「ひとつの体にふたつの心を持つWanderer／Melanieの三角関係（四角関係）」が中心になり、SFファンにとっては歯がゆい思いがしないでもない。SFにあまり馴染みがないロマンスファンの女性にとっては、SFの世界に触れる機会になるかもしれない。
Twilightのほうが作品の完成度は高いが、異星人の設定、その過去などはTwilightよりもよく考察されていて、こちらのほうが面白いと思う人もいるだろう。
欠陥はあるものの、エンターテイメント性が高く、はらはらどきどきしながら最後まで一気に読みきれる本である。

ラストが素晴らしいです
最初の2章ぐらいはわけ判らないので我慢して読んで下さい
すぐに引き込まれてこの世界で生きていくことになるでしょう
ハッピーエンドであることは確信してましたが，どう終わらせるのかいろいろ考えます
最後に全てうまく収まる素晴らしいラストです
しかしこれは一時の事で厳しい状況は続きます
勧善懲悪の単純でない世界がリアリティを感じさせます
ソウルの世界は理想的で素晴らしいです
人間には資格がないのでは？というサイロンの言葉を思い出します
