商品の説明

内容説明

There is a wonder and magic to childhood. We don’t realize it at the time, of course . . . yet the adults in our lives do. They encourage us to see things in the stars, to find joy in colors and laughter as we play.

But what happens when that special someone who encourages such wonder and magic is no longer around? We can hide, we can place our heart in a bottle and grow up . . . or we can find another special someone who understands the magic. And we can encourage them to see things in the stars, find joy among colors and laughter as they play.

Oliver Jeffers delivers a remarkable book, a tale of poignancy and resonance reminiscent of The Giving Tree that will speak to the hearts of children and parents alike.

A good book for healing. 2010/7/3
By Velocity Chyaldd - (Amazon.com)
形式:ハードカバー|Amazonが確認した購入
My mother showed this book to me recently and I fell in love with it.
It's simple yet profound, and I think it's a great book for anyone at
any age who is coping with loss. It gives a fresh perspective
on a painful subject. It's like a little dose of medicine.

Who is this book written for? 2010/4/29
By J. Prather - (Amazon.com)
形式:ハードカバー
I really like this author and have enjoyed all of his other books. I am really scratching my head over this one though, since I am not sure who this is written for. Here's my understanding: A curious little girl is enjoying a life filled with exploration, love and imagination. She then loses her grandfather (?), and decides to take her heart out of her body and place it in a bottle so she can no longer feel the pain of grief. Many years pass where the girl can no longer enjoy life and it is only after she finds a young child who breaks her heart out of the bottle can she enjoy life again and enjoy the many interests she found worthwhile before the death of her grandfather.

I understand that perhaps the author is trying to point out that closing off your heart to pain also closes out all the beauty in the world. I don't think a four or five year old coping with grief will get that from this book. This book left me feeling very sad for the girl's lost years and it bothered me that the only way she could resume life was through the help of another person?? I appreciate that pain can often be mended by experiencing things through the eyes of a child, but this sort of made it appear that the girl was helpless to do anything for herself to fix the problem.

This does not seem like a picture book for preschoolers or early elementary. I don't see it as being helpful to a child at all. I think the author has a nice sentiment that perhaps would be better served as a gift book for teens or adults, althouth the message to me is still muddled. This author once again shows the great depth of his imagination and creativity but I just don't think kids are well served by this effort. Disappointing.

a beautiful story...and, as always, amazing illustrations 2010/5/7
By Nancy Drew - (Amazon.com)
形式:ハードカバー
I thought this was a lovely book, and appreciate Oliver Jeffers's ability to let the reader create their own story out of this simply told, and beautifully illustrated, tale.
It's not really clear if the chair is empty because the man died, or if he has just gone away for a while. Is he even the grandfather? My six year old interpreted the story her own way, that the man went on vacation, and didn't find the story sad at all.
I met Oliver Jeffers a few weeks ago, and asked him about this book in particular, and his answer was that he left it up to the reader to find their own story, which I like very much.
I definitely recommend this book, and all others by this amazing author/illustrator.
