Some projects, such as the Sail Boat and the Party Hats, require freehand work, but for the most part, dexterity with a cookie cutter is the only key skill needed. The Stars and Balloons are especially simple and doable. The designs are more cute than sophisticated, the prose is spotty and the cookies become repetitive (the book features only one dough recipe, and all projects are covered in fondanta thick, creamy white sugar paste), but this volume is friendly and nonintimidating even for kitchen novices. Was an ok book if your just starting to make baked goods. I personally found the cookie designs a trifle bland and very similar to each other. If I had known what it looked like inside, Im not sure I would have purchased it.

time consuming but simple

I decorate A LOT of cookies and any method you use takes time. This book uses fondant for decorating. It has the texture of playdough, it's easy to work with, can be colored any shade you desire and tastes pretty good (depending on what brand you use - Wilton is not good!). Fondant is actually kind of fun to work with and the end result is very neat & polished. You roll out your fondant, then cut it with the same cookie cutter that you cut your sugar cookies with and paste it on the cool, already baked cookie with a bit of corn syrup to make it stick. Then you pipe some details on top of the fondant with a simple royal icing. Then you let them dry! There is a recipe for sugar cookies in this book that is perfect for rolled cookies that you want to decorate because this recipe will keep it's shape well during baking. The royal icing recipe is very basic (meringue powder, water, sugar). You do need some special supplies to make things easier but nothing too fancy. The cookies in this book are so cute and it covers most holidays and special occasions also. The price of this book is really good - especially on Amazon and is well worth the price. I would say this book is not too hard for beginners - it will be a bit of work but it's not impossible. I know from the photos on the front of this book that you are thinking it's too advanced and much too complicated but don't assume that! It's not that difficult.

How Do You Plan to Use This Book?

I purchased the book today and I've decided to return it. Kudos to the authors for figuring out how to use fondant for cookies. However, if I tell you to buy fondant, roll it, cut it with the same cookie cutter, adhere it to the cookie with corn syrup and decorate with royal icing -- you don't need to buy the book.
The photography is beautiful, but the book didn't inspire me as other decorating books have. If you are a fondant novice, this may not be the book for you as it lacks detailed instructions. I would also recommend practicing with royal icing before you begin your cookie project. Some designs use royal icing flowers, but there are no instructions about how to make them. These can be purchased at a cake decorating store or you can use other resources to learn to pipe them.
I was looking forward to this book, but it has turned out to be a disappointment.

Yes, this book presents several finished cookies with creative ideas on how to decorate cookies with rolled fondant (neat finish, pretty colors). However, --and be careful those people who are waiting for illustrations, or graphic aids on how to do it-- this book does not offer any pattern of any cookie (unlike Toba Garret's book), just a few photos at the end of the book. Even though the book tells how to decorate cookies, including what you need, more illustrations would have been very, very helpful. On the other hand, the recipe for the basic cookie is the widely known "no fail sugar cookie" recipe. I think this book is like a catalog of finished products.
