Brian is a fantasy illustrator whose work inspired the characters in Jim Henson's "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth." His other works include Faeries and Goblins. Alex Sheikman is the writer and artist of Robotika, a comic book published by Archaia. Robotika is his first major effort as a storyteller.

たまたま見つけたものの、画集か漫画か小説かわからなくて購入を迷ってました。…が、なかなかレビューが書き込まれないので、思い切って購入。
…絵本のような漫画でした。まだパララッとめくって、断片的に読んだだけですが、映画の前日譚というか、過去の話のようです。
絵だけ眺めてても、なんとなく話はわかるし、とにかく美しいので、「ダーククリスタル」ファンなら、買って損はないかと。
それにしても、続編がアメリカでは公開された筈なのに、日本では劇場公開はおろかDVDすらまだって…(-"-;)観たいよお〜o(>□<;)oです(T_T)

Interesting development of backstory

This graphic novel has several good points. It enriches the pre-Movie background introduced in Froud's World of the Dark Crystal without getting too bogged down in trivial details. Being a book of "mythology", you don't have to get too hung up on the specifics of certain tales, such as how the gelfling maid got her wings, and enjoy them for what they are, stories. While in a distinct style, the artwork fits well with the ambiance that Henson and Froud had already established for Thra. My personal favorite aspect of the book is the further development of the Urskeks. Building on the ideas introduced in the WotDC, you get more of their story built in a way that makes them more approachable as characters.
The only reservation I have is the introduction of Augra's son, Raunip. While a necessary element to telling the story, particularly because of how they developed Augra's character, Raunip's presence is strange. As the asserted "trickster" character, he is useful in demonstrating Augra's blind-spots in her role as Observer & Guardian of Thra, and helping flesh out the 'darkness' of the UrSkeks, but his origin seems pointless, and I can't help but think that before the series is done, he will be quite dead. Perhaps a gelfling could have served the same purpose?
Overall, I am very glad to have added it to my Dark Crystal collection.

Henson's The Dark Crystal Brings Back The Magic

The Jim Henson's classic the Dark Crystal is back as a graphic novel, and it brings the quality we all know and love. The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths takes readers to the beginning of a world, where life started to stir and a journey of a lifetime began. I knew of The Dark Crystal film, but never had the chance to view it. After reading this book, I now cannot wait to view it. The entire book had the feel of something ancient and sacred, and being a Henson work, it should be considered sacred to the creative community. The book does leave off on a cliffhanger, making me wish the second volume was already out, but I have a feeling it will be worth the wait.

Pretty pictures but not enough text (explanation) !

This book is beautifully made:
- Embossed Hardcover with gold lettering "DARK CRYSTAL"
- Foreword by Brian Froud with a rare (but too small) making of photo from the DARK CRYSTAL set (showing Jim Henson, Wendy and Brian Froud testing Jens Animatronic head)
- Frouds concept sketches for the new character Raunip.
- Full color printing on quality paper.
- Large format
- Beatifully painted comic art
Ok now the story: If you know the WORLD OF THE DARK CRYSTAL book it fits mostly quite well. But why on earth does Aughra has a son (Raunip)? Aughra was so special in the movie because she was the only one. This is also mentioned in the WORLD OF DC book! So this was a wrong addition IMO.
The other problem I have is there is not enough text to the (mostly) pretty pictures. Many things are shown in the images but are not explained. For example you see Aughra getting a third "eye" during the great conjunction. But why?
There are also a number of scenes with continuity problems. Many scenes come to an abrupt end. But this may be the problem of the lacking text.
Overall Im still very pleased by this book, mainly for the visuals.
