Attended by Lady Rochford, 24-year-old Anne of Cleves endures a disastrous first encounter with the twice-her-age king—an occasion where Henry takes notice of Katherine Howard. Gregory beautifully explains Anne of Cleves's decision to stay in England after her divorce, and offers contemporary descriptions of Lady Rochford's madness. While Gregory renders Lady Rochford with great emotion, and Anne of Cleves with sympathy, her most captivating portrayal is Katherine, the clever yet naïve 16th-century adolescent counting her gowns and trinkets. Male characters are not nearly as endearing. Gregory's accounts of events are accurate enough to be persuasive, her characterizations modern enough to be convincing. After finishing The Other Boleyn Girl, I'm very curious to know what happen to the other wives of King Henry VIII.
This book tells from the point of view from 3 person Jane Rochford/Boleyn (The Boleyn girl whose testimony send her husband and Queen Anne Boleyn to their deaths), Anne of Cleves (King Henry's would be 4th wife) and Katherine Howard (First Cousins of Anne Boleyn) in great detail of what happen after the fall of Anne Boleyn and the Boleyn Family.

不美人だからという理由でヘンリーから遠ざけられたと言われていますが、この小説での書き方は異なっていて、私にはこの方が自然だと思いました。ジェーンブーリンの特異さが際立っており、いままで聞いたことのない名前だったのですが、大変興味をそそられました。

The Other Boleyn Girl の後に読みました。この本は3人の女性の視点で描かれます。１人目はヘンリー8世の4番目の妃アン･クレーヴス、２人目は5番目の妃となるキャサリン･ハワード、そして３人目は２番目の妃アン･ブリンの兄嫁で３人の妃に侍女として仕えることになるジェーン･ブリン、３人がそれぞれ一人称で語るので、同じ出来事を複数の視点で見ながら、アン･クレーヴスの結婚から離婚、キャサリン･ハワードの処刑まで息をつかせません。歴史は変わらないので結末は知っているはずなのに、登場人物の心の動きをはらはらどきどきしながら見守ることになります。
