A black swan is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpredictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9/11. For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives.
Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. さてこの本はどの範疇に属するのでしょうか？哲学本、ファイナンス本、それともジョーク本、案外”人生如何に生きるべきか”の本なのかもしれません。それほどの内容が詰め込まれている作品です。著者の筆致は、驚くべきほどドライです。と同時に、前作と同じように、いつもユーモアを忘れません。ところで、このユーモアはどこの風土のユーモアなのでしょうか？著者はレバノン出身のキリスト教徒だったのです。今回の作品には、著者の必ずしも笑い飛ばすことができない経歴が、本書のテーマとも関連付けられてユーモラスに語られています。そしてところどころ、著者の情熱のほとばしりがその姿を見せます。最後まで変わらないのは、驚くべきほどの"懐疑を失うことのない経験主義"です。この多面的なアプローチと経験の厳密な整理により、知識にまつわる様々な”常識の虚偽”が暴露されていきます。直接的には、Bell curve, Platonicityなどの現代ファイナンスの根底をなす基盤が論理的に崩されていきます。現代ファイナンスの根底にあるモデルは、数学的なお化粧を落としてみると、ただのvoodoo "science"だったというわけです。284ページの比較表は、トレーダーが机の前に張っておくためにまとめられたものかもしれません。しかし、この作品のインプリケーションは、ファイナンスなどという俗的な”世界の崩壊”だけにとどまるのではなく、読者の世界を見る目を変えてしまうものです。ここが、全作とは違う部分です。予測できないのがBlack swanだとすれば、人間の今のこの瞬間の存在もblack swan だということを認識するだけです。

トレーダーである著者が前作Fooled by Randomnessの内容を更に深耕・発展させて、世の中は標準的な統計学の正規分布曲線(normal curve)で表現されるよりも、もっとfat-tailで予期せぬ出来事(randomness/Black Swan)に遭遇する可能性が高いことを、様々な分野の幅広い話題を縦横無尽に駆使して語る力作。
また、数学モデルの精緻化と標準的な統計学をベースとして「現実を説明できる理論」ではなく「首尾一貫した理論を構築するのに都合の良い諸前提(それが現実から乖離していようが関係ない)を設定し、出来上がった理論に則って現実を解釈しようとする、欺瞞に満ちた科学」としてのeconomics(特に新古典派)やfinance理論を徹底した懐疑的経験主義(skeptical empiricism)によって反証している(但し、だからと言って統計学がまやかしだという理由にはならないと思うが...)。
更に、歴史の見方についても、同様のskeptical empiricismに根差しており、歴史に関する記述というのは、その一瞬一瞬を同時代で描いていく物ではなく、所詮は「発生した事実を、後から振り返って、ある文脈で解釈すること」であり、常に後講釈による歪みや曲解(retrospective distortion)を孕み、これがrandomな出来事が発生する確率を過少に評価することにも関係することを示唆している。これは卑近な例で言えば、過去の相場のグラフを「分析」してマーケットの動きに関する後講釈の説明はできても、そこから将来のrandomな出来事を予想できない、ということにも通じると思う。読みながら非常に考えさせられる本である。

THE BLACK SWAN is a highly acclaimed piece of work from the writer of the stellar FOOLED BY RANDOMNES. Taleb is a philosopher of randomness, and before becoming a writer he worked on Wall Street as a senior trader. This book explores our inherent yet primerily ignored relationship with Black Swan theory, first concieved by David Hume. I encourage anyone who is remotely intersted in society, philosophy, politics or discussion to pick up this book and they won't regret it!! I'd also recommend reading the mesmerising and highly evocative novel The Fates by Tino Georgiou.
