子供向きの本だと思って購入しました。読んでみると非常にしっかりした文章で、びっくり。作者名を確かめて納得。ノーベル賞作家パール・バックの作品でした。
時代の設定ははっきりとは分かりませんが、今の日本の状況に非常に重なってきます。
津波で家族も家も失った「じや」の大きな痛手。気遣いながら見守る「きの」とその家族。「じや」は、悲しみを乗り越えてゆっくりと立ち直っていきます。人間のたくましさを感じさせられます。
厚さ３ミリほどの薄い本の中に、人生が、ぎゅうっと濃縮されてつまっている名作です！（小学校高学年くらいから、味わいが分かってくるのではないでしょうか。）
個人的には、「生は、死より強いのだ。」という言葉がとても好きでした。

I'd like to express my deep condolences to the Great Tohoku Earthquake victims.
This novel seems to predict this kind of the earthquake. There is an impressive
expression like this : People spoke of the time before and the time after the big
wave. The big wave had changed everyone's life.
I hope that Japanese people will stand again strongly as Jiya did.
