映画「キャッチミー...」のアバグネイル本人が現代詐欺テクニックをレクチャーしてくれる。偽造小切手や紙幣は日本人には普段馴染みがないと感じるが偽造カードやATM詐欺の話になるとそのハイテクさに恐怖してしまう。
一方、古くからあるローテク詐欺を著者は「不屈の手口」という。
夜間金庫に行くと「金庫は故障しています。預金は警備員にお預け下さい」という張り紙がしてある。となりに警備員の制服を着た男が立ち「すいません、金庫は故障中です。預金はここに入れてください。私は銀行の者です。」
アバグネイルは十代の頃にこれをやり一時間に3万5000ドルを集めたという。
知ってしまえば子供だましと思える手口に人々は騙され続け、これからも詐欺は無くならないと著者はいう。他インターネットの危険性など読んでいて身が引き締まる。
