現代ＳＦ文学を担う最高の作家と高評価を得ているオーストラリアの巨匠イーガンの傑作１０編を収録した日本オリジナル短編集の四冊目です。これまで著者の作品は長編が四冊と短編集三冊がハヤカワＳＦ文庫と創元ＳＦ文庫で出ていますが河出社からは奇想コレクションの一冊として初お目見えです。著者は日本のＳＦファンの間では有名で人気が高いハードＳＦの大家として定着していますが、遅まきながら私は本書で初めて著者の作品を読みました。まだ不勉強な身ながらも私が本書を読んで感じたのは著者が人類の未来について非常に憂慮されているという思いです。舞台は近未来の地球で政治体制等社会の仕組みは今と大きく変わっておらず、小道具として電話に変わる‘映話’と訳されているテレビ電話があるくらいです。本書のカバー・イラストで表題作『ＴＡＰ』の少女が不気味に微笑んでいる絵が示すように、収録作のどれもが人類の未来の進歩につながる発明や病気等の事象が何処か歪みねじれて行き凶悪な様相を呈する姿を描いています。もう一つ顕著なのは、短編だからかも知れませんがストーリー展開のアクションの部分は左程魅力を覚えないのに対して、理論派らしい思想を語る部分には流石の素晴らしい冴えが見られ読者の感情に強く訴えかける熱気を感じます。最後に私のお気に入りの力作四編を紹介して締め括ります。『新・口笛テスト』聴取者を熱中させ上の空にする悪魔的な音楽が巻き起こす戦慄の物語です。『悪魔の移住』醜悪な人間の本性をこれでもかと暴いて見せる語り手の正体は？『銀炎』エイズを凌駕する奇病の恐怖と死を賛美する新興宗教に怖気立ち暗澹たる気持ちになります。『ＴＡＰ』ＴＡＰインプラントという頭に埋め込んだチップであらゆる表現や言語感覚を備えた女流作家の不審死の謎を探る女私立探偵のＳＦ殺人ミステリ的な面白さと人類が幼くして悧巧になる不気味な未来像が読み所の傑作です。

4.0 out of 5 stars 究極の音楽で始まり、究極の言語に終わる, 2008/12/17
最初の「新・口笛テスト」は、究極の音楽といったテーマの作品です。これはよくあるテーマで、クラークの「白鹿亭綺譚」にもありました。
既存の音楽がＣＭに汚染されるというのは、現実にも起こっていることだなと思いました。嗅覚でキンモクセイの香りが、あるものと関連付けられているようなもので、それ単体で楽しむことが難しくなっています。

ラストの「ＴＡＰ」には、究極の言語とでも言うべき物が出てきます。感情の動きも含めて記録・再生する装置ということならＳＦではそれほど珍しくもありませんが、言語として存在するのに意味があります。テッド・チャンの「理解」と似ているといえば似ているかも。
究極の言語というのは、情報の完全なデジタル化ということなのかなと思いました。視覚や聴覚から嗅覚、味覚、触覚といった全ての感覚や考えを、完全な形で言語に変換できるということなのだから。

グレッグ・イーガン『TAP』河出書房新社を読み終えた。
奇想コレクションの一冊。待ちに待っていたイーガンの短編だったけど、予想にたがわず、期待どおりの面白さ。
特に気に入ったのは表題作の「TAP」。
いかにもありそうな脳内インプラントの話だけど、イーガンはそれをひとひねり。宗教、政治といったところにもつながり、単なる空想の話ではなく、ありうべき現実として描かれている。
ほかにもホラーっぽいのもあり、イーガンの短編の面白さがよくわかる一冊になっている。
未訳の作品も早く、翻訳されないかな。
