アメリカが誇るべき自由音楽人、キャプテンビーフハートの１９６８年作。傑作「トラウト・マスク・レプリカ」はまだ先だが、そろそろ彼の本来の音楽が頭をもたげ始める。リズム隊、ギター、隊長の歌、それぞれが独自の色合いを持って全体の混沌を構成していく。生産ラインによって手際よく作られた産業音楽を愛する人には悪夢、または悪い冗談にしか聞こえないだろうが、私は彼の音楽を聞くたびに体中の血液が浄化されるような爽快感を感じる。計算されて作りこまれた音楽もとても好きだが、私たちの中には彼の作る音楽のような不規則で一種不合理なリズムも現存しているわけで、これはその意味で大事な音楽でもある。音楽に自由なフィーリングを求める人にぴったりのアルバム。

このアルバム、意外なほどにど真ん中サイケです。
テープの逆回転、過剰なリバーブ、フェイザーのシューシュー音、左右のチャンネルを行き来する音、等々・・・。
ビーフハートには典型的なサイケデリック・カルチャーから距離を置いていた印象があったので、
よく知られた作品とは趣が異なるこの音に初めは「？」となってしまいました。

後によくよく調べてみると（権利の問題など未だに釈然としないところがありましたが・・・）、
どうやらこのサウンドはプロデューサーのボブ･クラスノウによるところが大きいようです。
まあ、ビーフハート本人もこのアレンジに賛同（または関与）していた事は当時の状況からして明らかなのですが、
ドラッグから足を洗った後年の彼は、この事を徹底して否定しています。
ちなみに彼はこの後すぐにレーベルを移籍し、収録曲の一部は後発の作品で録り直されました。

そんな曰く付き（？）のアルバムですが、他作品とはまた違った味わいがあり、なかなか楽しめます。
聴き所は6曲目の「Beatle Bones 'N' Smokin' Stones」。
ビートルズの「Strawberry Fields Forever」を隊長サウンドで茶化しまくってます。
