The things I like about this cookbook:
1. The things are very easy for a non-cook like me to make
2. They use ingredients found in every Japanese supermarket
3. It's in two languages, so you can know what the ingredients are when you are buying them.
4. The index is pretty comprehensive
5. There are lots of really basic things explained, like dashi
6. There are some interesting recipes (like umeboshi potato salad) that will impress in-laws and Japanese friends who've never actually made that particular combination before but are very impressed that a foreigner can make it and it can be so Japanese
