Forced to disguise themselves as interstellar traders, Captain Kirk and Mister Spock are trapped on the primitive world of Organia as Klingon Defense Forces occupy the planet. Determined to make the Organians see that they need not bow to oppression, the Starfleet officers sabotage Klingon materiel. In retaliation, the Klingon captain, Kor, executes many Organians. Unconcerned, the Council of Elders begs Kirk and Spock to stop the violence.
While in deep space the forces of Starfleet and the Klingon Empire scramble to position their fleets for the first onslaught of what could be a long and deadly war.

A Star Trek fan couldn't ask for a better book!

Mr. Ryan has done it again with this superbly written finish to a wonderful series. One of my favorite things about this author is that he never fails to add tons of nuances from the original episodes. From some of the obscure characters and references to the much theorized back-stories behind the original adventures.
Like much of the series, the events in this book lead up to and surround those in the episode, "Errand of Mercy." In the episode, we just heard about the coming war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. This book (as well as Ryan's entire series) map out the exciting and surprising events that lead up to that conflict. It's like having DVD extras for several of the original episodes!
Again, this is a must-buy for any Star Trek fan!

Excellent conclusion to a fine trilogy.

This book is extremely well-written, captures the characters well, has excellent pacing and good action. It suffers a tiny bit from the fact that the main character of the previous two books is gone (having died at the end of the previous book) but gains from progressing from the period prior to an excellent episode from the original series ("Errand of Mercy") to being a novelization of that episode, a novelization which is handled excellently in that virtually every scene from the episode is transcribed faithfully, the novelization merely filling in blanks between scenes and the internal thoughts of the charcters.
I dock it one star for not standing on its own; it relies too heavily on events from the previous books and therefore cannot be said to have a beginning. The series as a whole I will give five stars.

Entertaining Star Trek fun

"Errand of Fury/Sacrifices of War" is basically a novelization of the famous Star Trek Episode "Errand of Mercy" in which the Federation is on the brink of war with the Klingon Empire. The story provides much more background than we ever got in the television version as to the nature of the build up of tensions with the Klingons, and why war was imminent. We are introduced to what is going on at Starfleet Command, as well as to what the Enterprise was up to prior to being ordered to Organia. For Trek fans, this will all be interesting.
The author has a good feel for the Star Trek (original series) universe, and the characters all act consistently with what Trek fans expect.
The last quarter or so of the novel is almost identical (and I mean almost world-for-word) to the television episode, excepting that we learn a little more (not a lot more) about the Organians. In case there are readers of this review who have not seen the original "Errand of Mercy" episode, I will not disclose the ending in this review.
Good Trek entertainment. RJB.
