Sly & The Family Stoneの大躍進を計る作品であると共に、ブラックミュージックの歴史に残る大傑作"Stand!"。コマーシャルに富んだ楽曲達に加え、彼らの思想を上手く表現したメッセージ性のある詞、そしてロックミュージックにファンクのノリを加えたサウンド。全てが革新的で素晴らしく必然的に彼らは大成功を収める事となる。このアルバムはリーダーであるSlyがSly & The Family Stoneというバンドを持って表現したかった事の集大成とも言える内容で、人種の枠や音楽の境界を全て取っ払った彼の理想的な世界を形にした作品であると言える。

"Stand!"、"I Want to Take You Higher"のような精神の高揚を促すファンキーな楽曲。少し毒をもった口調でジョーク交じりで思想を展開する"Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey"。童謡調の馴染み易いメロディーとその合間に繰り出すファンキーなシャウトがかっこいい、全米1位を獲得したシングル"Everyday People"。個性を持った楽曲が立ち並び、その全てがまるで魔法がかかったかのように光り輝いている。そして彼らの演奏は圧倒されるほど、ダイナミックで強烈なグルーヴを形成している。文句無しの傑作であると共に、誰もがその才能を賞賛せざるを得ない天才的なクオリティに満ちた作品だと思う。

ただ、このアルバムがSlyの理想を示したものであるのなら、実際の現実というものはどうであったのだろうか？そして、その答えが次の作品"There's Riot Goin' On"ではないだろうか？このアルバムの成功により時代の寵児とまでなった彼であったが、そこで彼が目にしたものは、繊細な彼をくたびれさせ暗澹な感情を植え付けてしまう過酷な現実ではなかったのだろうか？
"I Want to Take You Higher"という曲があるけれど、"Higher"を夢見つづけていられたこの時代こそ、Slyの居場所だったのではないか？そんな気がしてしまう。

スライの代表曲満載の4枚目のアルバム。一曲目から楽しい雰囲気がみなぎる。2曲目になるとぐっと力を抑え、3曲目でまた爆発するという構成は見事。手拍子やコーラス、ラッパなんかのセンスはスライならでは。とりあえず楽しいアルバム。メッセージ性にしても曲にしてもあの時代では抜き出ていたはずだ。

スライ＆ファミリーストーンを代表するアルバムである。「スタンド！」や「ハイヤー」などのお馴染みのヒットナンバーが入っているが、よくよく聴くとスライは単なるファンクとかブラックミュージックではないスライオリジナルの音楽を作り続けていることに気が付く。「ハイヤー」の歌に入る部分などどうやってそんな拍子の中途から入れるのかと不思議に思う。正直なところ英語の力が十分にあるわけでないのでスライの作詞の世界観が十分にはわからない。しかしながらまさにウッドストックの時代ならではの黒人の世界観がここに展開されている。
