Weiss was a contemporary and friend of Bach who wrote great quantities of music for the lute. If you don't insist on Bach-quality music, Weiss can be very satisfying. These works (all suites whatever their titles) are thoughtful, ruminative music in the late Baroque style, very idiomatically written for the lute and very well played by Franklin Lei on two lovely-sounding instruments. Weiss's music doesn't have the energetic drive of Bach or Handel, but such music wouldn't work well on the lute anyway. If you're interested in investigating the repertoire, Naxos has, as always, given you a very economical way to do it. --Leslie Gerber
