私はバリー・アンドリュース在籍時の初期のファンなのですが、一番聴く機会の多いのはこのアルバムになります。トッド・ラングレンのプロデュースによりXTC本来の毒気が抜け切った骨抜きみたいな柔らかく耳当たりの良い音は、はっきり言って熱心なファンには不満でしょうし少なくともメンバーは激怒していたくらいなので、相当に不満だったようです。しかしながら無駄な装飾を取り去って素材の良さだけで勝負したこのアルバム。異色中の異色ではあるのですが、何となくなんですがフグのさしみのような旨味を感じます。(クレーム付くか？) アルバム全体の統一感や曲の流れ、聞き終わった後の余韻までを含めて完成度はすこぶる高いです。アルバムのカラーを決めている Ballet For A Rainy Day は大好きな一曲ですが、これもまたXTCらしくない曲なのですね。あれ？

語り継がれる傑作。もはや普遍性すら感じさせる大名作だ。アンディとトッドの衝突は有名だけど、この二人いったいどこに衝突する理由があったのだろうか。ビートルズになりたかったバンドと自らもビートルズサウンド再現をやってのけるほどのマニアなプロデューサー、こと音楽に関していえばジャケットの雰囲気そのままにクラシカルかつ芸術的かつ極上のポップなサウンドが展開されている。それまでのXTCに知性と品格を与えた感じだ。ラバーソウルからリボルバーあたりのビートルズに近いと思う。後にアンディ自ら最高傑作であることを認めているぐらいだから、これがもひとつとか言う人は単に音楽そのものより、二人の確執エピソードにとらわれていただけではないか。トッドのプロデューサーとしての仕事の中でもパティスミスやグランドファンクにも勝る本領発揮の素晴らしい傑作です。

XTCの他のアルバムはほほとんど（最近のものはあまり聞いていないのですが・・・）スコーンと抜けるような音像なんですけど、このアルバムだけはくぐもった、靄のかかった世界が展開されます。アンディ・パートリッジとトッド・ラングレンの確執がよく取り沙汰されますが、結局は出来上がった作品がすべてであって、その意味では最高のアーティストとプロデューサーの関係になったと思います。ポップでありながら、勢いや手癖に走らず、隅々まで丁寧に作られた楽曲が展開されていきます。コリン・ムールディングのソングライティングもこのアルバムがベスト！！といいたくなるくらい、すばらしい出来です。静かなところで、ヘッドフォンでじっくり聞くことをお勧めします。
