遂に出た歴史的名盤『Super Session』のリマスター盤。とうの昔にＣＤ化はされていたが、リマスター云々以前のものだったし、97年に続編的なライヴ･アルバム『The Live Adventure Of Al Kooper & Mike Bloomfield』（邦題『フィルモアの奇蹟』）のリマスター盤が出て以来ずっと待ち焦がれていたが、その甲斐があった高音質による再発だ。『Super Session』は、当時コロンビア･レコードのスタッフ兼プロデューサーだったアル･クーパーが68年に企画したジャム･セッション･アルバムで、ボブ･ディランの『Highway 61 Revisted』で共演したマイク･ブルームフィールドを誘って録音（アル･クーパーはヴォーカル、オルガンの他にアレンジ、プロデュースもすべて担当）。録音途中でマイク･ブルームフィールドが体調を崩したため、残りは、バッファロー･スプリングフィールドを解散したばかりのスティーヴン･スティルスが急遽代役を務めた。そのため、アナログＡ面がマイク･ブルームフィールド、Ｂ面がスティーヴン･スティルスとのセッションを収めた形となっている。時代がちょうど３分間のシングルからアルバム単位へと重要性が変化した頃の象徴的な作品で、様々な制約から自由になった演奏を収録するという画期的なアルバムだった。このアルバムでのマイク･ブルームフィールドの鬼神に迫るギター･プレイは、彼を一躍ギター!･ヒーローへと押し上げた（今から思うと嘘みたいな話だが、当時ブルームフィールドはクラプトンと並ぶスターだった）。特に有名な「Albert's Shuffle」は名演中の名演。他の曲でもブレイクビーツの定番でもある「Stop」のファンキーな味わい、ドノバンのカバー曲「Seasons Of The Witch」（こちらはスティーヴン･スティルスがギター）の秀逸なアレンジなど、どれもが聴きどころ満載。ボーナス･トラックでは「Albert's Shuffle」のホーン無しのリミックスは感激モン。こちらも名演揃いの『The Live Adventure Of ~』と一緒にどうぞ。

おなじみブルームフィールド、クーパーとそしてスティルスが中心となってつくった素晴らしいアルバムが、今回アルのアルバムを一挙にリマスターということでこのアルバムもより高音質になっての再発となったのだが、なんといっても今回の目玉は“Albert's Shuffle”と“Season Of The Witch”のホーン無し・バージョンだろう。

いわばこのアルバムの白眉となる２曲を通して（素のままの）セッションの様子を垣間見れるのである。実際これは素晴らしいというほかない！確かに頭でホーンによるメロディを自然と追ってしまうところはやはりアレンジが素晴らしかったことの証しであろう・・・、しかし実際その音がないから寂しいかというとそうでないところが凄いところで、臨場感というかその場の空気が伝わってくるようなリアルな感覚が何ともいえません。“Albert's Shuffle”ではブルームフィールドの記憶に残るすばらしいフレーズ満載のギターソロだけでなくオブリガードやバッキングでもほかの音に隠れることなく聴き取れ、紛れもなく名演であったまさに証となるものだと思います。続く“Season　Of The Witch”のスティルスのギターの音などはオリジナルバージョンよりも、より例のバッファロー・スプリングフィールド以降の聴き慣れた音に近いんじゃないでしょうか、これには嬉しくなってしまいました、ピックがこすれる音からワウの踏み加減までほんとやたらりアルに聴き取れ「楽しいったらありゃしない」状態です。

ただでさえこのアルバムには相当な思い入れがあって聴く機会も多いのですが、この２曲の追加のおかげでターンテーブルにのる（古い！）頻度が上がりました。ほんと日本に生まれてよかった！

とはよく名付けたものである。ある意味では我田引水的な響きもあるが、当時のポップス業界を思えば、比較的芸術志向の強いジャズ界で起こっているようなバンドやレコード契約間の交流セッションを公にする事が少なかったのかもしれない。
ブルームフィールドとクーパー、つまりディランの｢61号線再訪｣で顔を合わせた二人のセッション･マンがつるんでブルース･ロック･セッションをしようとなった訳なのである。
この時代、相変わらずブルームフィールドのギターが冴え渡っているのが目玉で、そこにクーパーのセッションの発想が重なって話題を提供、後に出された｢フィルモアの奇蹟｣のプロモーションにも相乗りして、日本でも予想以上のブームを作り上げた作品だった。
冒頭を飾る｢アルバートのシャッフル｣は当時のギター少年の憧れの一つであり、ブルームフィールドを代表するインストルメンタルでもり、学際のバンド演奏などでも数回見掛けた事のある人気素材曲だった。当時は多くのファンこれが本物のブルースだと勘違いしていたものだった。でも、それだけインパクトがあったアルバムだと言うことなのだ。
流石にブルームフィールドがイニシアティヴを取っていない曲になるとクーパーのヴォーカルが弱かったり、スティルスのギターに物足りなさを感じるのだが、全体としてコマーシャルにプロデュースされてきたポップスの流れに杭を打ち込んだ気概を感じるものである。ただし、スティルスに関してはアコースティックなセッションも取り入れるべきだったと個人的に感じているのだが、その話は横に置いておくとしよう。
本作はアフレコのホーンが取り除かれたネイケド･ヴァージョン等をボーナスに加えたリマスター盤である。
コロンビアのニューロック売り出し時代のメモリアルなアルバムだった。良い時代だった。
