　このミニアルバムとの出会いがAlice in Chainsに深くのめり込むきっかけでした。最初に聴いたのは「Dirt」でしたが、その時は個人的にかなり落ち込んだ心理状態が続いており、陰鬱で重苦しい部分にのみ共鳴して聴くのが辛いアルバムでした。半年後くらいにふと「Sap」を購入し聴いたところ、彼らのもう一つの本質に気が付き、その音楽にものすごく救われたのです(「Dirt」の魅力を再確認できるきっかけともなりました)。
　後に発表される「Jar of flies」も名作ですが、若干作り込まれた感触があるため、メジャー感というか外側に開放されていく印象があります。それに対し、「Sap」はよりパーソナルで内省的な感覚で、特に(1)Brotherと(4)Am I insideでは哀しげに、繊細に響くアコースティックギターの音が心に染みこみ、感情を抑えたレインの染みいるようなヴォーカルと、アン・ウィルソン(Heart)も加えた幻想的なコーラスが心の空間を押し広げゆったりと揺らしつつ静寂に導いてくれます。レインとジェリーの歌声がブレンドされると何故こんなに美しく響くんでしょう。内省的な表現を好む人には特におすすめしたい、自分に寄り添ってくれる素晴らしいアルバムです。
　(2)Got Me Wrongの若干ブルージーなリラックスした曲もいいアクセントになっていますし、(3)Right Turnではクリス・コーネル(元Soundgarden)も参加し、幻想的で美しい曲の合間にAlice in Chainsの本領と言える人生の深淵をのぞき込んだような暗さを垣間見せたり、4曲入りだからといって決して後悔させませんよ(5曲目にお遊びのシークレットトラックがありますが)。

　2002年4月19日、ドラッグの過剰摂取のため自宅において死後数日経過した状態で発見されたレイン・ステイリー（vo) 。享年34歳。あまりにも早過ぎる死だった。本作は彼を擁するシアトルの伝説的なオルタナティヴ・ロック・バンド「ALICE IN CHAINS」が2ndアルバム発表前に製作したミニEPである。全編アコースティック・ギター中心の音作りがなされており、AICにしては和やかな雰囲気のナンバー4曲とおふざけのシークレット・トラック1曲からなる。(1)、(4)ではHEARTのアン・ウィルソンが、(3) ではSOUNDGARDENのクリス・コーネルとMADHONEYのマーク・アームがヴォーカルで参加しており、普段とはまた違ったAICの姿が垣間見れて興趣深い。

本作は来日記念盤として発売された物らしい。最後の５曲目（シークレットトラックか？）以外は全てアコースティックメインの曲になっている。彼等特有の陰鬱さやアグレッシヴな感じは感じられない。1曲め，及び４曲目にはハートのアンウィルソンが参加。そして，３曲目ではサウンドガーデンのクリスコーネルとマッドハニーのマークアームが参加している。グンラジ＝どんよりとしてるとか，鬱っぽいイメージを持っていた僕は新鮮な感じがした。それでもそこはアリチェンなので，癒し系にはならない（笑）そこも，彼等らしくて良いと思う。
