日本の60年代のフォーク・ブームは外国の曲のコピーから始まりました。当時、我が国でもピーター・ポールアンドマリーと同様の人気があったのが、ブラザース・フォアでした。
ギター伴奏にのせての男声4人によるコーラスは、グループを作りやすいせいか、当時フォークグループの雛型のようになったのも理解できます。

ブラザース・フォアのヒット曲は沢山ありますが、列挙しますと、「グリーンフィールズ」「遥かなるアラモ」「500マイル」「七つの水仙」「花はどこへ行った」「さらばジャマイカ」などが上げられます。どれも日本のフォークグループにカバーされた曲ばかりですので、当時のフォークシーンを辿る上ではずせない曲だと思いますばかりですね。

「トライ・トゥ・リメンバー」を聴いていますと、彼らのハーモニーの美しさは、今でも十分鑑賞に値する歌唱ですね。4人のシンプルなコード進行を伴ったハーモニーの中に、温かさや懐かしさが全て込められています。

「グリーンスリーヴズ」のように、昔から歌われてきた曲も彼らのハーモニーのお蔭でその良さが再認識されたのだと思っています。
ジュディ・コリンズやジョニ・ミッチエルの名唱が思い出される「青春の光と影」も男声4人のハーモニーで聴くとまた違った趣が感じられます。

温故知新といいますか、確かにブラザース・フォアの演奏スタイルは古くなりましたが、味わいは今でも十分感じ取ることができます。
昔懐かしい曲を久しぶりに聴くとまた違った魅力を発見できますね。
