5.0 Best Rails book for beginners 2013/7/27

What I noticed first is that you're really put on rails from the start on. If you simply follow the book from the first page to the last there is really no chance to get lost or that one would need to know things that haven't been explained before.
It starts with chapters on how to install your Rails environment on Linux, Windows and MacOS and climbs up the ladder to general concepts of how to write good Rails applications including helpful tips for common use cases. I liked the chapter about "Internationalization", since a lot of books tend to forget that there are more character sets and languages in the world than ASCII and English.
I specifically like the less academic, hands-on style of this book and it is really fun to read and to try the exmamples right away. I'm sure if you're new to Rails you'll find this book also really useful and even the experienced will find some of the chapters a good read - I guess.

I read and did the exercises for the first 6 chapters of "Ruby on Rails 3.2 - Step by Step" online, and it is the best. Rails is a challenge, but this book makes it do-able. The explanations are clear, the links for more information are relevant, and the repetitive nature of the exercises actually makes the process of development second nature. Doing ALL the exercises is the key, even if you read it, and say "I know what's going on", a month from now when you want to create a 1:n association, you will have forgotten, but by doing all the exercises, you get it, and you remember!

I am buying the book for 4.0 for two reasons -

1) The install I ended up with is rails 4.0, and many of the examples no longer work. Searching the web for how to adapt them has been instructive, but it is slowing my progress.

2) I want to support this author, he has done a great service for helping unravel the mysteries of how rails works, ones that the typical blog tutorial doesn't really address.

My only comment on improvement would be to cover other methods for installation - RVM actually was not very nice in my case - I have a project I am working on, and it messed with my path in ways that made me have to uninstall RVM and go with homebrew...

In closing, excellent work, you will not be disappointed...

4.0 Great Book 2013/8/19

Great book. In spite of some spelling mistakes, the content of the book is great. The examples make easy to understand the theory and it provides a good introduction for people new to Ruby On Rails. Another great thing is that it doesn't use the same examples you find everywhere (Twitter clone or Blog), it uses completely different examples.

5.0 Probably the best Rails 4 book out there 2013/11/12

As of today, I have all the books on Rails 4. From the awful 'Jumpstart Rails 4' to the not so bad 'Agile Web Dev with Rails 4'. This one, Ruby on Rails 4.0 Guide, is the best of them. Although you can really see that the author is not a native English speaker, if you are not offended by quirky grammar, his deep knowledge of the framework will make you a great Rails coder. For example, in the chapter on ActiveRecords alone, I learned more about Rails than in any of the other books combined. Strongly recommended read right after you finish the 'getting started' guide on the official Rails site.

4.0 Comprehensive Intro with Minor Flaws 2013/9/29

The author, Stefan Wintermeuyer, does not speak English as his birth language, but the grammatical and spelling flaws affect less than 1/2% of the text and it's easy to deal with.

He's a master of Ruby and Rails, and the subjects are covered quickly but quite comprehensively. I used this book as a returning coder coming back to Rails after more than half a decade dealing with much less elegant languages that shall remain nameless.

But, enough about him and me.

The why: This is the first (and currently only) book out on Rails 4.0. It's plenty good enough even for a neophyte with little programming experience. Lots of workable examples.

I learned a lot more about Ruby and Rails even than I'd forgotten. It's well laid out and deals with a number of topics such as internationalization and site caching in much better ways than I've seen in any other Rails book. The author also gives a short but potent example of production deployment using Unicorn and nginx, again a rarity in any form.

Is this the only Rails 4 book you'll need or want? Probably not, if you're a production coder, but you can probably keep going with Rails 4 until Obie Fernendez comes out with his latest take on The Rails Way.

I was quite satisfied with this book. Well worth its price.
