Ever the primary conceit of mainstays Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, 1976's The Royal Scam marks the first time the Steely Dan duo actually owned up to the fact. Musically, it's their edgiest, most guitar-driven record (thanks to Becker and a murderer's row of session greats that includes Larry Carlton, Elliot Randall, Dean Parks, and Denny Dias). Lyrically, the songs cut an ever-sardonic, presciently discomforting slice of modern life that was a couple decades ahead of the game (who else was extolling the virtues of condom-couture, la "The Fez," mid-Me Decade?). Though it didn't garner the radio attention of Aja, its more jazz-suffused, multiplatinum follow-up, Scam boasts a diverse, occasionally muscular musical rhetoric and some of the Dan's most telling portraits (the deranged, yet all-too-familiar killer of "Don't Take Me Alive," "Kid Charlemagne"'s drug-culture celebrity, the tropical convenience of a "Haitian Divorce"). 　1976年リリース、ジェフポーカロやマイケルマクドナルドが抜けて、代わりにバーナードパーディ等が参加し、よりリズムが黒く、粘り気のあるジャジーなサウンドにシフトした。自分的ベストトラックは「滅びゆく英雄」でイントロ、ミディアムテンポのリズム、メロディー、ギターソロ、全てが完璧で、なぜこのシングルがビッグヒットに至らなかったのか本当に不思議に思えて仕方がない。このアルバムは捨て曲や、足を引っ張る楽曲や違和感のある曲が皆無で、凄い曲がずらりと並ぶ。2曲や3曲目にも1曲目に似たような迫るような緊迫感があり、4曲目の「サインオブストレンジャー」はややリラックスして聞けるが、エンディングの畳み掛けるような構成には驚かさせる。5曲目はディスコ風でシンセがきれいな曲だが、歌詞はコンドームを歌っている。6曲目の緑のイヤリングはギターテク披露会のような曲で、様々な音色のギターが次々に繰り出される。7曲目の「ハイチ式離婚」は珍しくレゲエ調の曲で、歌詞が非常に笑える曲。なぜか英国ではシングルカットされヒットしているが、ものすごく下品なギターソロがなんともいえない。8曲目のエブリシングユーディドは一転して寒気がするほど怖い歌詞で、浮気を知った旦那が妻を銃で撃ち殺す曲、「イーグルスを鳴らせ、近所が聞いている」という歌詞は「ホテルカリフォルニア」の歌詞の中で「スティーリーナイフ」と歌われたお返しとする説があるが、使われ方はどちらもアンハッピーで共通している。最後の曲は妙な余韻を与えて終わる曲、全体的には「うそつきケイティ」ほど爽やかではなく、「彩」ほど芸術的ではなく、猥雑で男の世界的なサウンドといえるかもしれない。ジャケットもNYがどんな世界かということを見事に物語っていると思う。

こういうアルバムを聴くにつけ、昨今の多くのバンドの“秩序を失った”音作り、アルバム作りを嘆かわしく思う。スティーリー・ダンは当初、ドナルド・フェイゲンとウォルター・ベッカーを中心とした“バンド”だったが、途中から２人を核にした音楽制作集団（他のパートはセッションマンによる道具と化した）に変わって行った。通常パーマネント・ネームを持ったバンドまたはグループは、その集合体を前提にアルバムを発表して行くものだが、スティーリー・ダンは違う。“２人の音楽を具現化するための場”として「スティーリー・ダン」があり、これを維持して行くために２人以外の“構成員”はアルバム制作ごとにサポート・メンバー的に入れ替わる。このアルバムは彼らの５作目であるが、前作『Katy Lied』あたりから徐々にその形態に変化して行った。彼らの最高作と言えば６作目『Aja』もしくは７作目『Gaucho』を挙げる人が多いと思うが、聴く側の受け入れ易さなどを加味して考えた場合は本作『The Royal Scam』が“ウラ最高作”と言えるのではないかと思う。とにかくボーカルを中心としたサウンド全体の音の輪郭がハッキリしていながらも、それらを構成する各楽器の絡み具合いがまるで完成したジグソーパズルのごとく正確無比に構築されているのには驚かされる。とにかく隅々まで丁寧な作りであり、30年前に発表されたこの作品をピークに、音楽は無秩序で短絡的になって衰退・崩壊を通り越し、「雑音となった」と言っても過言ではないだろう。このアルバムの“構成員”であるチャック・レイニーとバーナード・パーディーのリズム隊は全く非の打ち所がなく、またラリー・カールトンによるギターは圧巻。音とフレーズの構成が本当に素晴らしい。1のソロなどはギターで表現可能な範囲の限界まで到達した、まさに入魂のギターワークである。これらを取りまとめた“本隊”の２人は、フル・オーケストラの指揮者のごとき働きだ。本当に凄い芸術作品である。

ダンを初めて聴いたアルバム。きっかけはスティーブ、ルカサーが古いインタビューで、カールトンのプレイは異常（凄い）と言っていたことに興味を持ったからだった。確かに１でのソロをはじめスリリング。２はサックス嫌いの私がすきになつたブラスセクションがかっこいい。（今ではサックスも聴く）３は歌メロが良い。そのほか緻密な仕掛けで楽しめる曲が多い。私は「エイジャ」よりもこちらが好きだ。
