With a permanently snarled upper lip and the perfect matinee-idol blond hair, Billy Idol made punk rock palatable for MTV and the masses. He did so by watering down punk's aggressive attack with dance grooves and stretches of keyboards where no self-respecting punk would've dared. Essentially, he made pop music with a spare razor blade tossed in for fun. When it clicked, as it does on the anthemic title track of this, his career highlight, well, only an anarchist could complain. "Eyes Without a Face" and "Flesh for Fantasy" are two other early '80s radio stapes found here and they went further to establish Idol as a potential Vegas balladeer. カラフルな'80年代に燦然と輝くであろう作品。大してお金をかけてなさそうなジャケットと録音でしたが、独特の浮遊感とともに現在も活躍する“ロック”ギタリストのSTEVE STEVENSを発掘したことが極めて大きな意味を持つ作品。
パンクというかグラムの再来みたいな華麗なイメージでしたが、曲はよかったですよね。特にイントロのリフもすごく印象的な1曲目“REBEL YELL”は最高！カッコいいです。これ以外にもシングルカットし売れた曲はありましたが、最後まで一気に聴けてしまいます。当時こんな感じでギターがフィーチャーされたアレンジ、バンドもなく、斬新でした。
当時の斬新さが未だに印象に残っており、星5つ。当時の「ノリノリ」を掴むのに絶好の一枚。

７０年代パンクバンドで活躍後、アメリカに渡りセックスシンボルとして持ち上げられ８０年代に大ブレイク。９０年代は映画のサウンドトラックなどへの楽曲提供で成功というのが彼の簡単なヒストリーです。ストレートで疾走感がある１曲目は彼の代表曲の一つです。ちなみに彼の相棒として活躍したギターリスト　スティーヴ・スティーヴンスは９０年代氷室恭介と活動を共にします。

当時目にした某書籍では、"パンクのファッションとイメージだけを借りてショウビズに迎合した云々"とあった事を覚えています。第三者的な目から見れば、B.アイドル(vo)の扱いは(現場のファンの視点は別として)、音楽評論家と名乗る方々からはあまり"良し"と見られていなかったのかもしれません。
その言葉を肯定するが否定するかはリスナーの自由ではありますが、個人的にはフィフティ・フィフティといった感じで、肯定も否定もできませんでした。
ただ、形骸的であれ何であれ、本作('83年作)に収められている楽曲からは[1]、[3]、[5]といったナンバーがポピュラリティを得た事からも判るように、至ってストレートに80sロックシーンに切り込んだ佳作と思っています。
出自であるジェネレーションXは確かにパンク。拳を振り上げ、イェー！と叫ぶだけのイメージが強いのかもしれませんが、仮に全く先入観を配して先の[3]などに対峙してみると、意外にも艶のあるヴォーカルに驚かされる事にもなります。
スティーブ・スティーブンス(g)を右腕に、K.フォーシー(プロデュース)を左腕に迎えた本作、やはり80sのチャートを振り返ると異常な人気を博した一作として押えるべき作品かと思います。
