Album Details

2008 debut album from the Welsh singer/songwriter (not to be confused with Stephen Duffy, who released albums in the '90s under the name Duffy). Welsh songbird, Duffy, came to the attention of Rough Trade Management in 2004. Rough Trade pointed Duffy in the direction of guitarist/producer Bernard Butler (Suede/The Tears/McAlmont & Butler). Duffy spent the next couple years honing and developing her songwriting skills all the while discovering hidden musical gems that inspired her. The fruits of her intense labor is this magnificent album, a masterclass in mature, resonant Pop, 10 tracks including the first single `Mercy'. Polydor Records.

最初の印象は素直にDusty Springfieldが現代に蘇ったという感じ。
同じイギリス出身ということもあるが、ファッションや髪型まで似てます。

そしてサウンドは・・・・・
明らかに作為的に６０年代風のサウンドを狙ったと思われますが、まんまと
ハマった私がいます。楽曲のバリエーションは豊富で質も高く、最低３曲は
シングルヒット可能でしょう。

まずRockferryの重いブルースロックから始まり、TemptationsのMy Girl風の
Warwick Avenue（んー良い曲だ）など昔のモータウン風のナンバーが続く。
そして歌唱力に自信がなければとても歌えないギター一本をバックに
Syrup & Honey。ハスキーな低音が時にJanisを想わせる。中盤のハイライト
でしょう。
極めつけはUKチャートNO.1に輝いたMercy。Stand By Meのようなイントロ
から入るハモンドオルガン風のバッキングがカッコいい。Ray Charlesでも書き
そうなR&Bナンバーです。そのうち日本のCM曲にでも使われそうな気がする。
そして最後のDistant DreamerはPhil Spectorを思わせるナンバーで締めくくる。
まるで一人Ronettesです。

いやー満腹、満腹。
60年代POPSが今の録音技術で聞けるのは結構幸せだな。若い世代の人たちは
お父さんやお母さんに聞かせてあげると好感触かも・・・・。

あけすけな下町気質。可憐でさみしがりや。この歌声をことしのはじめにしってからずっと追いかけてきた。何度も輸入盤に手がのびかけたがイギリスでのブレイクをつたえきき、しんぼうして日本盤を待ちつづけた。それはともかく大ヒットした｢Mercy｣はノーザン･ソウル･マナーにのっとったダンサブルな曲だったが、アルバムのほうはサザン･ソウルふうのスロウが大半をしめている。｢Hanging On Too Long｣のゴスペルっぽいコーラスにもそのにおいをみつけることができる。どうしてもエイミー･ワインハウスとくらべられてしまうことがおおいのですが、この時点ですでにおおきく異なっている。またエイミーはサラーム･レミやマーク･ロンソンなどアメリカのヒップホップ界の人材とくんでいたが、ダフィーはロック側のひとであるバーナード･バトラーとくんでいる。ほどよくエッジィさをのこしたバンドサウンドがアメリカのそれとはちがう純正英国産ソウルという印象をつよくしている。恋にやぶれ、バッグに歌をつめこんであたらしい街へむかう｢Rockferry｣から、ここではないどこかできっともっとよいことがまっていると力強くうたう｢Distant Dreamer｣まで、ありふれた女の子のこころの変遷をたどる歌詞世界もみのがすことができない。とくに“あなたに夢中なの/もう解放してほしい/ひざまづいておねがいするわ”といっている｢Mercy｣のつぎが、“ひざまづいて懇願してももうおそいの/愛は憎しみへかわってしまったわ/つぎのオモチャをみつけなさい”という｢Delayed Devotion｣なのが身もふたもなくておもしろい。'60年代にであったソウルと英国ロックがこうしてまたむすびついて、たぶん誰の胸にも古いしみのようにのこっているたよりなさやあまずっぱさやほろにがさをよみがえらせてくれる。車のなかでローラ･ニーロ『Gonna Take A Miracle』とつづけてきいたのだが、これはすごくつうじるものがあるとおもいました。

日本盤の発売を待っていました。長かった！

最初に思ったのは、時々テレビで見ることができる６０年代〜７０年代初め頃の映画のバックにかかっていそうな曲だなぁということ。そんな風景が合いそうだな〜と。今と時の流れとか人同志の関係が全然違う時代。そんな感想を多くの人が感じると思います。（彼女自身の出で立ち迄も、その頃のファッションが似合いそうに思えてきませんか？）
そして、何故だかその年代をよく知らなくても、懐かしさとか思い出に浸りたくなるような切なくて甘酸っぱいような不思議な感覚がするのです。どこかへ置き忘れてきた心象風景と重なるものを感じさせる彼女の歌であり音楽だと思いました。
彼女の歌うBaby〜は、特別！その言葉がこんなに新鮮で瑞々しいものとして聴けるなんて・・・。この言葉って歌う（べき）人が歌うとこんなに違って聞こえるんだなと、とにかく新鮮な発見があって、凄く心に残りました。

彼女の歌にはストーリーが有りますね。そういう意味では、ものすごいインパクトとか言うのは無いけれど、別の意味で凄く聞く人を惹きつけていると思いました。
彼女の歌の好みがオールドファッションだからなのか、言葉がやたらに並ぶ歌なのではなく、語尾の余韻みたいなのを大事にしているような感じを受けました。で、私は特にその部分にナンともいえない魅力を感じましたね。その余韻にこちらも浸ってしまいます。
ハスキーだが、どこか甘さもある声が魅力的！時々倦怠っぽさもありつつ、思いを切々と感じさせるビターでスィートな声に、聴き惚れてしまいました。

当分はふと、色んな場面で彼女の歌をつい聴いてしまいそうな予感がします。
