Mr. Kalkins book is wonderful to handle, look at, and dream over. It is not what one would expect from the title. I was looking for techniques to join, roof, and finish containers. That is not what one finds in Adam's book. However, there are some inspiring designs and pictures here if you are into container architecture and much can be infered from what is seen. Mr. Kalkins book is pleasurable to handle and flip through the pages. I enjoy books of this type and it will find a treasured place on my bookshelves. I purchased my copy direct from the Architect website. Service was very prompt.

This book is a wild riff on a highly conventionalized system. What could be more prosaic and dumb than a box
designed to carry consumer items from one place to another? Each is exactly the same. But Kalkin has created
joy, anarchy and life using these simple blocks. His method reminds me of Wolfram's "A New Kind of Science"
where extremely complex improvisational variations evolve out of the simplest, most rudimentary computer
programs. This book begins with a single cellular unit called the "Monk's House"and works its way through FEMA
relief housing, hydraulically driven transformative pieces for Illy and Yahoo, million dollar homes, sustainable refugee villages, and a church encircled by
an LED cornice spewing the Old Testament. A remarkable work of the imagination, well illustrated and nice to hold in your hands.

Review of Adam Kalkin's Quik Build Book

After having become interested in building "Green," and having read literature and seen videos on the use of ISBU shipping containers, I realized that there were not all that many industries actually creating shipping container homes. I came across the Quick Build web site, after reviewing many sites, and found it interesting that Adam Kalkin's company was the ONE company which actually produces different models of container homes, the most popular of which is the 2,000 square foot home. I took a chance, and ordered this book, and was very pleasantly surprised at the information it contained. The book is quite close to a work of art. There are many models of homes and other types of buildings which can be built using shipping containers, and the Quik Build book shows those which can be build by Kalkin's company. For anyone interested in using shipping containers for building structures, I highly recommend this book. It is large, and contains Cyanotype and color photos of parts of their process in building and assembling the Quik House and others. I found it surprisingly informative, and it was delivered promptly. I have read and re-read the book, and I learn something new each time I go through it. The only problem which I may encounter, should I choose to have this home built for me, would be where I would like to have the container home built, as many city planning departments may not be aware of the requirements, engineering, safety, etc., when it comes to container homes being built in their jurisdictions. ( would really appreciate actually seeing this product completed. I am particularly interested in the Quik House.)
