　ScrittiといえばCupid & Psyche 85が専門家の間で圧倒的に高い評価を得ていますが、当時、そこまでの音楽マニアではなかった私は、かなり背伸びして頑張っても、理解に届かない気がしてました。何度聴いても不思議な感じの方が強く、心地良さがあまり感じられなかったのです。
　でも、Provisionは限りなくポップに洗練されていて、一度聴いただけで大好きなアルバムになりました。宝石箱のようにキラキラ輝くサウンドに、キャッチーなメロディライン、耳元がくすぐったくなるようなグリーンの甘~いヴォーカル。歌詞も哲学的な内容、ファンタジー、幼い感じのラブソングまでバラエティ豊か。ゲストのロジャー・トラウトマンとマイルス・デイヴィスは音楽に豊かな色取りを添え、マーカス・ミラーのベースがバックボーンのようにサウンドを支えています。また、Oh Pattiのビデオクリップの麗しい(！）グリーンは溜息ものでしたよね。
　Provisionを聞き込んでから、Cupid & Psyche 85をもう一度聴いたら、やっと前作の良さというか凄さを体感できるようになりました。以降、どちらも甲乙付けられないほど好きですが、もし軍配を上げるとしたら、Scritti入門アルバムとなったProvisionの方にしておきます。

1988年発表。
前作の大傑作『キューピット&サイケ85』から3年。1986年にはマイルス・デイビスがアルバム『TUTU』の中で『パーフェクト･ウェイ』を取り上げるなど、スクリッティ・ポリッティの周辺は大変慌ただしかった。そして半数の曲にかかわったマーカス･ミラーとの兼ね合いもあって(マイルスのアルバム『TUTU』も事実上ほとんどマーカス･ミラーがつくってマイルスがその上でソロだけとったようなアルバムである)、本作の『オー・パティ』でのマイルス参加ということになったのだろう。
もう一つの話題が『ゼア・シー・ウォズ』と『シュガー&スパイス』でのロジャー・トゥラウトマンの参加だろうがやっぱりマイルスにはかなわない（●＾o＾●）。
ゲストにばかり目が行くがグリーンも健在である（●＾o＾●）。グリーンは1979年に病気になり故郷ウェールズでの長い療養生活を強いられた時にR&Bやレゲェ・ファンクなどに目覚めたそうである。なるほど病気の療養生活中の頭脳の中でできるリズムとコーラスというのはスクリッティ・ポリッティの音楽を言い当てている気もする。
しかしながらこの後、スクリッティ・ポリッテイは11年間沈黙する。次作は1999年6月発表の『アノミー・ボノミー』を待つことになるのである。

前作「CUPID & PSYCHE 85」より聴きやすくポップな出来だ。

こないだ中古レコード屋でLPで手に入れたが、アナログで聴くとさらに音が鮮明。

相変らずライヴパフォーマンスを無視したスタジオ打ち込みサウンドで、フロントマン　グリーン・ガートサイドはベースを効果的に使う。（7)「BAM SALUTE」はスクリッティ風レゲエナンバーで、ベースのチョッパーがポイントになってる。

（2)「OVERNITE」や、シングル（6)「OH PATTI」はミディアム・バラードナンバーで前作のバラード「A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE」より情感的になってる。

スクリッティはこの後90年代初頭にカバーシングルを2枚出した。どちらもこの「PROVISION」の延長線上にあるサウンドでニューアルバムリリースも近いのかとワクワクしていたが、この「PROVISION」から待つこと11年・・1999年にリリースされたアルバム「ANOMIE & BONHOMIE」はいわゆるヒップ・ホップ路線でサウンドがガラッと変わってしまった。

この気持ちわかる人はわかると思うが、往年のファンの期待は裏切られた言えるだろう。

音楽雑誌などで読んだが、どうやら公式発表されてないアウトテイクがかなり眠っているようだ。2006年になってニューアルバムと並行して「early」も発売されたが、話によるとまだまだ眠ってる音源がかなりありそうなので、何枚に分けてもいいから出してほしいところだ。

スクリッティの「CUPID & PSYCHE 85」と「PROVISION」の2枚は80年代の束の間の夢だったんだなと聴く度に感慨深いものがあります。
