　ScrittiといえばCupid & Psyche 85が専門家の間で圧倒的に高い評価を得ていますが、当時、そこまでの音楽マニアではなかった私は、かなり背伸びして頑張っても、理解に届かない気がしてました。何度聴いても不思議な感じの方が強く、心地良さがあまり感じられなかったのです。
　でも、Provisionは限りなくポップに洗練されていて、一度聴いただけで大好きなアルバムになりました。宝石箱のようにキラキラ輝くサウンドに、キャッチーなメロディライン、耳元がくすぐったくなるようなグリーンの甘~いヴォーカル。歌詞も哲学的な内容、ファンタジー、幼い感じのラブソングまでバラエティ豊か。ゲストのロジャー・トラウトマンとマイルス・デイヴィスは音楽に豊かな色取りを添え、マーカス・ミラーのベースがバックボーンのようにサウンドを支えています。また、Oh Pattiのビデオクリップの麗しい(！）グリーンは溜息ものでしたよね。
　Provisionを聞き込んでから、Cupid & Psyche 85をもう一度聴いたら、やっと前作の良さというか凄さを体感できるようになりました。以降、どちらも甲乙付けられないほど好きですが、もし軍配を上げるとしたら、Scritti入門アルバムとなったProvisionの方にしておきます。

1988年発表。
前作の大傑作『キューピット&サイケ85』から3年。1986年にはマイルス・デイビスがアルバム『TUTU』の中で『パーフェクト･ウェイ』を取り上げるなど、スクリッティ・ポリッティの周辺は大変慌ただしかった。そして半数の曲にかかわったマーカス･ミラーとの兼ね合いもあって(マイルスのアルバム『TUTU』も事実上ほとんどマーカス･ミラーがつくってマイルスがその上でソロだけとったようなアルバムである)、本作の『オー・パティ』でのマイルス参加ということになったのだろう。
もう一つの話題が『ゼア・シー・ウォズ』と『シュガー&スパイス』でのロジャー・トゥラウトマンの参加だろうがやっぱりマイルスにはかなわない（●＾o＾●）。
ゲストにばかり目が行くがグリーンも健在である（●＾o＾●）。グリーンは1979年に病気になり故郷ウェールズでの長い療養生活を強いられた時にR&Bやレゲェ・ファンクなどに目覚めたそうである。なるほど病気の療養生活中の頭脳の中でできるリズムとコーラスというのはスクリッティ・ポリッティの音楽を言い当てている気もする。
しかしながらこの後、スクリッティ・ポリッテイは11年間沈黙する。次作は1999年6月発表の『アノミー・ボノミー』を待つことになるのである。

Cupid & Psyche 85から３年、Scritti Polittiとしては短いスパンで発売されたこの作品だが、全体的に音数が減ったな、という印象を受けた。業界人に大受けしたCupid & Psyche 85から次のアルバムには相当期待をしていた人も多かったと思われる。故ロジャー・トラウトマンや故マイルス・デイビスがゲスト参加しているという話題性もあったが、この２人はちゃんと役割を果たしたな、というのが私の感想。まあシンプルになった、といえばおしまいだが、アリフ・マーディンは今回出てこなくて、代わりにグリーンとデビッド・ギャムソンが共同プロデュースになったので、まず音数を減らそうと思ったと同時に「俺達でやりたいことをやっちまおう」と思ったのではないかと推測される。１曲だけなんか浮いている曲、Best thing everだけがグリーン、デビッド、そしてジョン・ポトカーのプロデュースで、多少Cupid & Psyche 85っぽい。ちなみにこの曲はMadonnaが主演したWho's that girlのサントラで初めて披露された曲です。Cupid & Psyche 85ではまった人はサントラでScrittiが参加する、と聞いただけで喜んだものです。ただCupid & Psyche 85っぽいだけで、なんでこんな曲書いたの？とちょっと疑問視してしまった人も多いはず。でもはずれは無いです。名曲がたくさんつまったScrittiからの贈り物と思って下さい。Cupid & Psyche 85を持っていない人は必ずクリックして、両方買うとよりScritti Polittiが好きになるはず。騙されたとは言いませんが、騙されたと思ってゲットしてみて下さい。アレンジャーを目指す人には必須アイテムです。
