　何と言うべきか、この読後感。２１８Ｐで短い部類だが、心に重く残る。スペンサーは私にはこれが３作目であったが、早くも生身の人間としての存在感が迫ってくるようだ。
　物語は、離婚（人生）の危機に立つある夫婦を、私立探偵スペンサーとその女友達のスーザンが救うというものだ。ある夫婦とは、just another couple に過ぎない。二人の男女の主張をどう受けとめるかは全く読み手次第であり、正解はありえない。スペンサーもスーザンも何も答えない。しかしその夫婦は、スペンサーのおかげで、絶望的窮地からは救われた。そしてもう後はこの二人次第である、と構わない。
　スペンサーとは何者か？スーザンが問う。"Fighter, lover, gourmet cook ?"　わからない。ただ彼に惹かれるのだ。頼りたいのだ。

夫婦間の精神的軋轢で問題を起こす妻と、仕事上の野心と焦りで問題を起こす夫。そして、失踪した妻を捜すよう夫がスペンサーに依頼するところから話が始まる。問題の夫婦とその周りに群がる胡散臭い連中をまとめてひとつの事件に誘い込み、罠を仕掛けて夫婦を窮地から救うというのが話の筋。こう書いてしまうと単純極まりないが、夫婦を救うだけでなく精神的に立ち直らせようとするスペンサーのすがすがしい姿が実は肝かもしれない。説教臭くなく、しかし優しさが滲み出ている言動はほとんどカウンセラー。この姿とタフな私立探偵の姿がダブるのが本書の魅力。

スペンサーシリーズ4作目。
ついにホークが出てきた！
ホークの初登場シーンにはあっと驚きました。
最初は敵かもしれないとは予測していたが、
まさかホークが○○だったとは意外！
30年前の古い作品となめていたが、
時代を先取りしていた傑作である。
ジョー・R・ランズデール やイアン・ランキン にも通じる新しさがあります。
芸術ネタはイタリア人ネタが出て来たが、
お馬鹿なイタリアルネッサンスで唯一人、
21世紀に通用するミケランジェロネタだったので、
ロバート・B・パーカー は本当に芸術を正しく理解していると、
再度惚れ直しました。
ウーマン・リブの闘士も出て来るし、
単純な男性誇示の物語と思わせて、
スペンサーシリーズは、
優れたジェンダーミステリ、芸術ミステリでもある。
エンタメとして軽く読めるが、
問題意識の高い人には討論のネタとなる
素晴しいテーゼがいっぱい埋まっています。
タイトルからは宗教ネタに期待する人もいるかもしれんが、
宗教など語るにたる話題ではないので、
スペンサーが討論吹っかけても、
相手が「約束の地」が宗教ネタだと気付かず、
スルーされてギャグにしているのも素晴しい！
スペンサーシリーズは討論小説と呼ばれることもあるが、
無意味な抽象討議は諌めている知的で現実に即した素晴しい本である。
家族を守る為に闘う事に疲れた男は、
本書を読んでジェンダーの呪縛から解放されて下さい。
