Ronni L. Gordon, Ph.D., is a prominent author of foreign language textbooks, reference books, and materials for multimedia. She received her Ph.D. in Spanish language and Spanish and Latin American History and Literature from Rutgers University, and taught at Harvard and Boston University. She is an education consultant specializing in curriculum development in foreign languages, literature, and history, and teacher training.
David M. Stillman, Ph.D., is a well-known writer of foreign language textbooks, multimedia courses, and reference books. He holds a Ph.D. in Spanish linguistics from the University of Illinois and taught at Harvard, Boston University, and Cornell. He is a professor at The College of New Jersey where he teaches Italian, Spanish, French, and Hebrew.

So not what I'd hoped!

I was very excited for this book to come out after teaching myself through Practice Makes Perfect's Basic Spanish. I really liked how Basic Spanish listed all the vocab words at the beginning of the chapter, additional ones for each exercise, and clearly explained each exercise. I highly recommend that book as I was able to teach myself the basics of Spanish without a teacher.
After taking a few months off, I thought Beginning Spanish would be the "perfect" way to get me back in to it. Instead, it throws you right in with a list of Spanish words and no definitions to practice articles. Then it starts asking for the names of stores. This book might be good if you're an advanced speaker looking for a refresher course, or if you're working with a teacher and have other sources. On your own as a beginner, not so much.
The CD is decent, which is what bumped this up to two stars, but it doesn't go along with what's in the workbook at all. Also as far as I can find it still doesn't list the vocab words by chapter, so if you're like me and don't know a lot of the words going in you have to type each one in and look it up individually. Not a good way to learn!

Super Awesome! Perfect for On-the-Go

I got this book because I wanted to re-learn Spanish after not speaking it for a decade. Back when I did speak it, I was at a high-intermediate level. But when I began this course about six weeks ago my Spanish was super rusty and halted. My tongue wouldn't roll an r, and my vocabulary was limited to the few verbs you hear and say in almost every sentence the world over. Present tense only, mind you.
Boy did I luck out with this book! It's the whole enchilada! A workbook, a CD-ROM, and 10 hours of Spanish-only audio files that you can download to your iPod! And it's a bargain!
The bulk of information, and instruction is on the CD-ROM. It has a very simple interface and is easy to use. It teaches through dialogues--not pictures. Each chapter has a few dialogues that highlight a particular point of grammar, and then the following pages are the variations of that dialogue highlighting different vocabulary words, and congugations of verbs. Each page has links to the translation of the material, and grammar lessons associated with the dialogue.
I personally don't spend hardly anytime on the computer because I downloaded all 10 hours of audio files on my ipod and I listen to the chapter I'm on once or twice per day as I walk my dogs. The audio is high quality, and the voices are very pleasant Latin American accents. The audio is EXACTLY the same as is on the CD-ROM. It is ordered the same way too. It is set up so that they speak a line or two, and then you repeat it. So you get lots of pronounciation practice. So, I use this as a Spanish-only audio course. Hey, I can't sit for hours infront of a computer...
In case you're wondering, the material covers the present, preterite, relexive verbs, imperfect, future, conditional, passive constructions, reverse constructions, perfect tenses, the gerund, comands, all the way to the present sujunctive. So, there's a lot here. It's the whole enchilada!
This is the most comprehensive, convenient, and pleasurable way I have found to re-familiarize myself with Spanish. I am so enthusiastic about this program, I can't praise it enough. And I'm already on capitulo 11!
Please, please, please make a more advanced follow-up. I don't want this to end!
