　誰もがエコバニの最高傑作に挙げる3rdアルバム。この時期までの彼らは、ワールド・ミュージック・フェスの WOMAD(World of Music, Arts and Dance)に参加するなど、音の幅を貪欲に広げようとしていた。その一つの成果がインド人ヴァイオリニスト・シャンカールが本作に参加したことであり、雄大な音の厚みをアルバムに加えている。例えば、ライブではシンセでオープニングが始まる「カッター」だが、このスタジオ録音バージョン以上の音を彼らは未だに出せずにいる。

　音の内容は荒々しいギターのカッティングの疾走、シャンカールの音圧、（今では全く考えられないが）静かな狂気を孕んだマックのボーカル、といった全ての要素が、凍てついたような緊張感と美しさを醸し出している。彼らにとっても、そしてロックの世界にとっても、後にも先にもこんな鋭いアルバムは他には存在していない。このアルバムは80年代英国ニュー・ウェーブの宝物の１つである。

前作が英音楽誌NMEの年間ベストアルバム１位に選出されるなど、
待望のうちに発表され、
その期待を大きく上回る進化を遂げた快作にして最高傑作の３ｒｄ。１９８３年作。

何よりアルバムジャケットの色使いやロゴ、
内気な少年団とでも言いたい
不思議に均整の取れたメンバーのルックスやキャラクター、
そして当時の他のロックとは全く異なる絵の具で
描いたような、
神秘にして禁欲的、その裏腹の攻撃性をはらんだ音楽・・・
これらがミックスされてトータルアートとして非常に魅力的。
このアルバムでピンと来ない人は彼らとは無縁でしょう。

インド人ヴァイオリニストShankar(Ravi Shankarではない。TALKING HEADS,LOU REED,古くはAMON DULLなどロックミュージシャンとの共演が多い人。）を大胆起用し、
アルバムのカラーを決定づけ、
わかり易く？言ってしまえば、
全曲をBEATLESの”tomorrow never knows"的サイケ楽曲のみで構成した、
８０年代ネオサイケの時代に誰もがやりたくて出来なかったことを完璧に実現。
（ダラダラした垂れ流しサイケデリックはほかにあったと思うけど、この緩むことの無い張り詰めた弦のような緊張感は他のバンドには持ち得なかった。）

その楽曲は彼らがライブのオープニングに流したグレゴリア聖歌を思わせもする
転調を極力抑えることでもたらされる抑制と、
それを劇的に開放する興奮との、どこか思春期の性衝動！を思わせる圧力釜？のようなエネルギーを孕んでいて、
それが私のような当時の少年少女を狂わせたんだと思う。
いわばこの数色の絵の具で描かれた禁欲（＆快楽）の世界に
退屈なモノトーンを感じるのか、
目くるめくグラデュエーションをみるかはあなたの感性次第。

ロック史的には他の同時代アーティスト（U2,CURE,JAM,NEW ORDER,SMITHS・・・）らに比べて
顧みられることが不当に少ないのが不思議だが、
いいものばかりが世に残るわけではない好例として、
過去の音楽カタログを目ざとくあさる励みとなります、かねぇ・・・。
（あの頃、上に挙げたアーティストは皆バニーメンの特異な個性を羨望するか、
裏返しの反発をするか、いずれにせよ強く意識していたと、インタヴューなんかを読んだ記憶では思い出します。）

ボーナストラックのデモヴァージョンは
ゴツゴツしたカッティングで強引に推進していく
彼らのVELVET UNDERGROUND好きを髣髴させる楽曲で、
速度感が落ちるところが逆にダサかっこいい？。

最終曲"never stop"は華やかなリズムに彩られた、
このアルバムの路線をダンス・オリエンテッドに昇華した名曲シングルかつライブのアンコール用代表曲。

　サードアルバム。多くのバンドが第三作目にデビューからの総決算あるいは重大な転機を迎えているが、彼等のこの作品もその代表的な例だと思う。バラエティーに富んだ収録曲群、東洋的な旋律に導かれて始まる"The Cutter"、サイレンのようにけたたましいリズムギターと厚みを増したゴージャスなアレンジが聴ける"Back Of Love"のヒット曲を巻頭に配して、聴き手に強い第一印象を与える事に成功しています。｢ロシア民謡｣を想い出させるような表題曲、初期のギター主義的な音を継承する6、ダンサブルな出来栄えがサード以降の展開を予感させる10など聴き所の多い作品で、中でも、リズムギターで構築した音のトンネルの内側を転がるように手拍子を添えて歌われる"Ripeness"は初期の音に舞踊的要素がうまく絡まって｢サード｣の典型的な音作りを代表する楽曲だと思います。

反面、マリンバをフィーチャーした暗い闇のような出だしが印象深い3、無調に近い旋律を借りて｢自己を投影する存在｣を求めているような4&9、多重録音したマックの歌とつぶやきが容赦なく｢現実世界で生きる｣聴き手の耳を襲う8など、ある意味彼等らしい暗いサウンドが埋め込まれていて、陰と陽の振幅の激しさゆえに何となく落ち着かない感じがするアルバムでもあります。
