「生きる伝説」と称されるプリンスが、相変わらず速いペースでアルバムをリリースしてくれる事に対して、純粋に“有り難い”という感情が先にきてしまう今日この頃。

２０年超のコアなファンとして、このアルバムの音を聴いて思うところは色々とあります。相変わらず多様なスタイルを披露し、それでいて全ての音がやはり「プリンス」でしか有り得ないという部分は流石！と唸るしかありませんが、重箱の隅で「1. Planet Earth」が「Empty room」+「Stay of the world」っぽい…とか、「9. Lion Of Judah」が「Cinnamon Girl」の焼き直しなのでは…とツッコミを入れたくなる部分もあります。しかしキャリア３０年にして相変わらずのフロンティア精神を保持し続けている事には、ただただ頭が下がる思いです。

総体的な印象として、密室的な音作りと口べたで人付き合いが不得手だった'80年代のプリンスの特徴とは一転して、太陽の日差しが降り注ぐ開放的な浜辺の空間で、多くの人々とのコミュニケーションを積極的に取ろうとする…そんなプリンスがこのアルバムには居るような感じを受けます。（特に「4. The One U Wanna C」と「10. Resolution」から感じる底抜けの明るささと言ったら！）古くからのファンはかなり違和感を覚えるでしょうが「Musicology」から始まった新たな試みがある程度このアルバムで帰着をみたのかな…そんな感触もあります。

日本のJ-POPが、手近なところでの恋愛沙汰に一喜一憂する程度の曲で溢れているのに対して、プリンスの視点は常に地球規模の「愛」に充ち満ちている…そうしたスケール感の違いを是非とも日本の若い世代の人たちに体感して貰いたいと思わせる一枚だと思います。

自らのレーベルやマイナーなレーベルからの作品ももちろんよかったのですが、久し振りのメジャー、ワーナーからの｢ミュージコロジー｣以降、明らかにプリンスは新しいディケードに突入したという確信を僕たちは抱きました。そこから三枚目である本作もその勢いを維持したままの快作と呼べる出来で、古くからのファンは溜飲を下げたはず。とかく一時代を築いたアーティストが言われがちな、｢先進性を失った｣｢音的にひとつ古い｣云々の横槍も撥ね返す、このほとばしる創造性を一体だれが揶揄中傷できるのでしょうか。瑣末な瑕疵(と言っていいならですが)や、いかにもプリンスといった手触りを越えて、スネアの音や曲を盛り上げていくギターやボーカルなどの総体としてプリンスは、もはや普遍という言葉にふさわしい高みにまで登りつめたような気がします。

とびきり楽曲の質の高い1曲目、一見なんてことないけどキレの良いGリフとジャストでタイトなリズム隊がメチャメチャかっこいい２曲目を試聴して、即買った。
僕が一番好きだったアルバム「1999」「パープレイン」の頃がなぜか思い出される。
リサ＆ウエンディやシーラ・Eといった名前がクレジットされているからだけではないだろう。
‘８５年のパープレインツアーの頃、ジミヘンのように全身全霊でギターを弾きまくりロックしていたプリンスの姿が目に浮かぶ。

中盤以降は良く練られた多彩なスローナンバーによって、アルバムにぐっと深みが出る。
粋なピアノとミュートしたフリューゲルホーンがジャージーな３、
タイトなファンクロックチューンの４をはさみ、５はスローナンバーだけれども、馴染みやすいメロディと練られたアレンジにより深い味わい、全く退屈しない。
６はコーラスの絡みが心地よく、７はウエンディの弾くマンドリンがとても良く似合う。

ディスコ感覚モロ出しに涙がチョチョ切れる８からはまたパーティー再開だ。
バッチバッチのホーンセクションは短いソロ回しを含めて、そのカッコよさは聞かないと分からないね。
９、フェイザーのかかったGのイントロでまた「パープレイン」を思い出すも、アップテンポでひねりも充分、文句なし！　エンディング１０もストレートだ。
正直言って、プリンスのアルバムを最後まで聞きとおせたのは久しぶり。しばらく愛聴盤になりそうだ。

最後に、このアルバムは録ったものを加工して現代的な音にすることをあえて拒んでいるように思う。
表ジャケには例のサインのみで文字がなく、曲名すら書いてない（プロダクション情報はあるが）。
“Planet Earth”と“人間の文明や技術の進歩”が、放っておけばより相入れない状況になる、というメッセージと受け取るのは深読みだろうか？
