亡くなったと思ってたマイケルクライトンの新作が出ると聞いてびっくり。早速、購入して読みました。１７世紀のカリブの海賊のお話で、ストーリー自体はそんなにびっくりする展開でもないんだけど、そこにあるのはやはりクライトンの作品でした。圧倒的な時代考証と、読めばたちどころにそのシーンが瞼の裏に浮かぶ視覚的で正確かつ精密な描写。科学の最先端ネタを取り入れた作品の場合もそうですが、時代物を書く時も彼は読者をいつも「本当にあった（ある）話なんじゃないか」と思わせてしまいます。そのリアリティが堪らないんですよね。ムシけらのように人を殺しながら、木の葉のような海賊船がカリブ海を一周します。街も城も船の中も糞尿の垂れ流し。血は体中から噴き出すし、お化けタコや人食い人間まで登場して大海原は荒れ狂い…。大砲をぶっぱなし、ナイフで喉を掻き切り、手榴弾の原型を炸裂させ、まあ、やりたい放題の大暴れ。もう読めないと思ったクライトンワールドをもう一度体験出来たのは大変ハッピーでした。 でもこれ、彼が亡くなった後に「完璧な原稿」として発見されたものだったんですね。読み終わった後で、「作者について」を眺めてたら最後の文章がそう言ってました。そうか、これで本当に最後なのか…。小さなため息をつきながら改めて彼の冥福を祈った私でした。誰か隠された彼の遺作をもう一つ発見してくれないかしら。クライトンさんなら、それぐらいの仕込みをやってくれてても不思議はないんだけど。

この作品は、クライトンの死後コンピューターから見つかった完成原稿である（もう１作のテクノスリラーは未完）。時は1665年、カリブ海領域はスペインがほぼ支配しており、ジャマイカを拠点にする英国とスペインとの関係は表面的な平和条約が取り交わされているものの敵対的だった。 ジャマイカを拠点とする英国の海賊たちはPirateではなくprivateerと自称しており、スペイン船からの略奪がひとつのビジネスだった。 そのprivateerの中でも最も悪名高く、愛される存在が チャールズ・ハンターだ。 このハンター、誰もが真っ先に連想するのがジョニー・デップの演じたスパロウ船長であろう。クールで、野蛮で、ハンサムで、頭が良くて、娼婦から貴婦人まで虜にするセクシーな船長、という設定はちょっとできすぎだが、男性読者が感情移入するには理想的だ。 知事との正式な契約でハンターは宝が満載しているスペイン船を略奪する計画を立てるが、船が隠されている Matanceros島は完璧に守られ、誰一人生還したことがない。しかもそこを統括するのは、残忍さでは右に出る者がいないCazallaだ。ハンターは癖の強いメンバーを集めて、不可能な冒険に乗り出す。喉をかき切る殺人は日常茶飯事だし、毒蛇、毒矢、巨大蛸Kraken、と一難去ったら、また一難。まるで映画を観ているような小説だ。 時代と場所の設定は異なるが、はちゃめちゃな冒険がThe Great Train Robberyとよく似ている。スピルバーグが映画権を獲得したということなので面白い娯楽作品になることだろう。 残念なところは、完成度がいまひとつで、ハラハラどきどき度がこれまでほど強くなかったことである。彼に時間が残されていたらもっと良い作品になっていたと思う。

My review is on two parts.First, the contents. I am a huge Michael Crichton fan and has read ALL his books. I've got to say this ranks among my least favorite book by MC. One thing his books never lacked was suspense; but this lacks it. Also he always has a strong plot most of the time but not here. Usually I do not take more than two days to read his books but this took lot more time, because it doesn't get you hooked; at least it didn't get me hooked. Secondly, the product. The book was badly cut; as in, the edges of the pages were like they were not cut by a machine but like someone tore them by hand. It was so bad, I promptly returned the book (the Amazon Japan people kindly agreed to replace it with another copy without charging me any shipping), but unfortunately the replacement book they sent was also the same! I must say this was the first and so far the last time something like that happened to me using Amazon, but this was disappointing. They should not have had them for sale in the first place; it was in such bad quality.
