When he was 11, his parents divorced. Slater and his brother, Sean, were raised by their suddenly single mother, who struggled to support two young sons. After Slater's surfing career took off, he made the transition into acting and modelling. He spent a season starring on the popular television show Baywatch, where he won the hearts of women young and old, including Pamela Anderson, whom he dated for about a year. He has also been featured in Versace ads.
In Pipe Dreams, he shares the stories that have influenced his life and have inspired him to overcome both personal and professional hurdles and achieve his dreams.
著者について
Kelly Slater is a world-champion surfer who came out of semi-retirement in 2002. When he has time he sings with his band, The Surfers. He owns the Kelly Slater Boardrider's Club, a clothing and surf shop in Los Angeles, where he lives.

素晴らしい自伝です。波に恵まれないフロリダの少年が、6回も世界チャンピオンに輝くまでのエピソードが書かれています。10代の頃はビッグ・ウェーブが怖くて乗れなかったこと、父がアル中で、家族の問題から逃れるように海へと向かったこと、決勝で対決した親友のロブ・マチャドとのエピソード、バッシングを浴びたコンテスト遅刻の真相など、知られざるケリーを見ることができます。サーファーとしてよりも、人間としてのケリーは、とても温かく、病気の父との再会と死別、娘への想いなど、感動なくして読むことはできません。英語の難易度は高くなく、英検2級程度でも辞書を片手に読めます。また、飽きさせない内容で、最後まで一気に読むことができます。ケリーやコンテストに関心がない人でも、本の完成度自体が高く、絶対お薦めです！

ケリースレーターが大好きで購入しましたが、この本を読んで今あるケリースレーターの人間性の素晴らしさが更に分かりました。小さい頃のこと、両親のこと、そしてそのとき思っていたことなど事細かく記してあり、本当に胸に熱いものが込み上げて涙が出てきました。そういう経験があったからこそ、人間としてとても成長し素晴らしい考え方、人間性になったんだなぁと納得してしまいました。この本を読む前から彼の話し方、表情から感じ取れる心の綺麗さが感じ取れましたがこの本を読んで更に彼の事が大好きになりました。恋の事なども包み隠さず全部書いていてそこもまたかっこいい。。。ぜひケリーファンはもちろん、そうじゃない人にも読んでもらいたい本です。なぜか心があったかく、また成長できたような感じになれますよ☆
