Although this band is largely responsible for defining the circa 1990 rave culture, their music is far removed from the bass-heavy electronica usually associated with dance clubs. Ten songs on this album are characterized by lazy tempos, groovy bass hooks, and artfully simple percussion tracks which interact perfectly to form smooth, danceable beats. The rhythmic foundation is further accented by tasteful guitar licks and restrained keyboard parts. Their lyrical content tends to be a little dark, even seedy for exstacy fueled dance parties. マンチェスターのお馬鹿ギャング集団からなるハッピーマンデーズが、一躍シーンのTOPに躍り出た最高傑作。
そう。まさに『躍り出た』という感じだった。
マンチェスターの人々がマンデーズの音楽を聴いて踊り出したのだ!!
当時この出来事は衝撃だった。
ロックを聴いて踊るという事は、今でこそ普通だが当時はそんなことありえなかった。それを実現させてしまったのがハッピーマンデーズである。
これは神が仕組んだ奇跡のようであった。
その奇跡の始まりは、Vo.のｼｮｰﾝ･ﾗｲﾀﾞｰがライヴ中にヤクの売人ベズをステージに引っ張り上げた事から始まった。
コカインでヘロヘロになったｼｮｰﾝは何故か、ベズにステージ上で踊るように命令。
しょうがなくステージ上で踊り始めるベズ。
それを見た観客の数人がベズにつられるように自然と踊り出した。
この瞬間にハッピーマンデーズはロックとレイヴの融合を実現させたのだ。
この一瞬の奇跡がこのアルバムには収められている。

ストーンローゼズの１ｓｔに続く傑作。
むしろローゼズよりマンチェスタームーブメントを体現していたバンド。
「ファンク始めました」っていう感じのいかにもチープでＢ級なサウンドが、
逆に新鮮で楽しい。そして時代にマッチしていた。

にも拘らず今やメディアではローゼズばかり持ち上げられていて、
マンデイズは「ああいたねぇ」みたいな扱いなのが納得いかない。
もっと再評価されてもいいはずだ。

所謂「マンチェスター・ムーブメント」を代表するバンドとして、ストーン・ローゼスと並び立つ存在として語られることの多いハッピー・マンデーズの、世間的には代表作として語られることの多いサード・アルバム。

確かに、このアルバムは「ステップ・オン」「キンキー・アフロ」という彼らにとってのUKトップ１０ヒットを２曲とも収録しているし、何よりもプロデュースを担当した敏腕DJ/リミキサーであるポール・オークンフォルドのセンスの良さもあって、耳ざわりのいいスムーズな音に仕上がっている。で、実際に「すごく売れた（ファクトリーレコードの社長である故トニー・ウィルソン談）」訳だから、まあマンチェ・サウンドを知ろうと思ったらこのアルバムとローゼスの1stと、あと『スクリーマデリカ』を聴けば十分、かも知れない（シャーラタンズとかインスパイラル・カーペッツとか…ノスタルジーはいいってw）。

あくまでも「入口」です。ロックに「批評的知性」や「実存的表現」を求める人ならある意味避けて通れない踏み絵的バンドだと思う。「究極の飛び道具」かつ「危険球スレスレの変化球」だとは思うけど…

でも、ローゼスが音楽的に天才の集団で、ムーブメント抜きでも「すごいバンド」だったのに対して、このハピマンはあくまでも「状況の産物」であり、「大きなマトリックスの一部」であるという違いがある。つまり、天の邪鬼のアート・ディレッタント達がロンドンのシーンに対して対抗意識を持って興した「ファクトリー・レコード」の所属アーティストであり、その先達である「ニュー・オーダーが始めたロックとダンスの融合」の正当な後継者であり、クスリをキメて夜通し踊るという、NYのクラブシーンをマンチェスターで再現した「ハシエンダ」での熱烈な支持をバックにのし上がってきた、という。実際、彼らのブレイクの下地を固めたのは2ndアルバム収録のシングル「Wrote For Luck」の、P・オークンフォルドによるリミックスがハシエンダでアンセムとなり、その１２インチがロングセラーとなったからだ、というのはトニー・ウィルソン著の『24アワー・パーティ・ピープル』にも書いてあった通り。

だから、このアルバムの成功というのは確かに「収穫の果実」ではあるけれども、「ハッピー・マンデーズ」というバンドの本質的な魅力が堪能できるのは、実はこれ以前の1stと2ndということになる。ヘロヘロでボロボロ、デタラメだがドラッギーでサイケかつシュールな、正に「実存的な」生のグルーヴでこちらをギョっとさせるところにこそ、このバンドの真骨頂がある。確かにこのアルバムも良く出来てはいるのだが、この妙に収まりのいいプロダクトだけで彼らを判断するのは…残念というか、それをしてる限り「本命のローゼス、対抗のハピマン」という構図から抜け出せないだろうなあ、と。
