リチャード・ローティの哲学を自ら説明した半自伝的な著作で、格好の入門書である。ローティは著者自ら書いているように「相対主義者」という悪しき評価に抗弁して本書を始めているが、彼の主著「哲学と自然の鏡」を含めて、一貫しているのはアナキーなまでに自由に考え抜き、社会的責任としての主体を屹立させようとしている。アメリカの伝統的哲学プラグマティズムに信奉しながら、その深遠な奥行きは大陸の超越論にも論理実証主義にも通底する問題構成を平易に説きながら、現代的なscience warsなど含めた研究評価などにも鋭利な批判を展開し、現実世界をクールに見つめる視線は自由を愛する哲学者の信念に他なるまい。
