story was good - but writing felt very old fashioned

I read this book in a day and it kept my attention. The story line was one I could understand and enjoy.
That being said I couldn't help feeling this book could have been so much better. I felt like I was reading about two kids from the 1800's rather than the 1970 - 1990'S. The writing style just seemed old fashion to me
and during reading it on my Kindle I felt the need to make the font size bigger as i felt like I was reading in a tunnel.
I know the above sentence sounds crazy but that is the impression I kept getting while reading this novel. I would recommend this book but beaware it's not a light read. Kinda dark and depressing.
