2009 digitally remastered and expanded deluxe double vinyl LP pressing of the classic sophomore album from the Heavy Metal kingpins led by Ozzy Osbourne. Originally released in 1970, Paranoid still stands as an important milestone in the history of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. This ultimate edition features a beautifully remastered version of the album on the first slab of wax plus an alternate version of the album including instrumental mixes, alternate recordings on the second slice of vinyl. デビュー・アルバム『Black Sabbath』で唯一無二の世界を築き上げた彼らのセカンド・アルバム。

シングル・ヒットとなった“Paranoid”をはじめ“War Pigs”“Iron Man”“Fairies Wear Boots”は彼らの代表曲であるばかりでなくそのオリジナリティは３０年以上経った今も輝いている。彼らのサウンドに影響を受けた若手は星の数ほどあるが、彼らを超えたものは未だに出てこない。

バンド名とその重く沈むようなサウンドが際立っている為か悪魔崇拝と勘違いされるバンドだが、“War Pigs”や“Electric Funeral”を聴くとあきらかに反戦・反核と行き過ぎた科学文明への警鐘であり、その思想は次作の“Children of the Grave”を通して後期のアルバムである“Dehumanizer”までをも貫き通している。が、そういう思想云々は抜きにして彼らの卓越したアイデア、凄みを味わうべし。

ヘヴィーメタルとはブラックサバスのことを言う。鉄板をガリガリする音がするだろ! これはモーターヘッドのレミーの言葉だ。決してパープルみたいにスピードはない。ZEPみたいに格好よくない。でも間違いなくサバスはHMの帝王なのだ。本作は二枚目のアルバムで、ライブでもおなじみの#1.#2.#4.#8が収録されており人気の高いアルバムである。しかしながら、パラノイドをシングルカットしたのは失敗だったというメンバーの発言を読んだことがある。確かにこの曲はキャッチーで、アルバムを通して聴くとなんだか浮いているような印象を受ける。たぶんサバスに興味を持った人の大半はこの曲を聴いてというのではないか。当時ライブ会場に子供がたくさんきてしまったらしいが(ローティーンだと思う)、それを指して失敗という言葉を彼らは使ったのだ。ファン層が広がっていいことだと思うんだけどねぇ。それはともかく、サバスの魅力はパラノイドよりもアイアンマンやウォーピッグスにあると思うのはマニアのひとりよがりなんでしょうか。そんな事ないよね?

一曲目からラストまで続く、ひたすらに暗くて重たいサウンド。1970年発売なので音質は悪いが、これは紛れもなくヘヴィーメタルである！！重く引きずるような、トミー・アイオミの天才的なリフ。まるで呪文を唱えるようがのように歌う、独特なボーカルのオジー。アグレッシブで素晴らしいグルーブを叩き出す、ギーザーとビルのリズム隊。内容はサバスの名曲が満載で、ヘヴィーメタルの教科書と断言できよう！余談だが、このアルバムがメタリカのバックステージで、いつもガンガンの大音量で流れていたらしい。ヘッドライナーだったオジーが「何故、こればかりかけているんだ？」と質問した所、「あなたに言ってもわかりませんよ。」とラーズは答えたという。
