Book Description
Written at the upper-elementary/middle school level, these stories are an enchanting sampling from islands that appear to some like "twinkling stars in the night sky" of the Pacific Ocean. Intended as a literary companion to Pacific Neighbors and Pacific Nations and Territories, these ancient legends add depth of culture to any study of the islands from which they spring. The stories in Pacific Island Legends are also indexed thematically, allowing students to investigate a cross-section of island lore, for example, by comparing creation myths throughout the Pacific. Beautifully illustrated with culturally appropriate wood cuts by Connie J. Adams, Pacific Island Legends is a window into an important but often overlooked part of the world.
About the Author
BO FLOOD, Ph.D., has published several books for children, including a collection of Micronesian myths, From the Mouth of the Monster Eel. She is the 1997 winner of the CNMI Governor's Award in the Literary Arts and an instructor at Northern Marianas College.
BERET E. STRONG holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Brown University and an M.F.A. in poetry from Warren Wilson College. While teaching on Saipan and serving on the CNMI Council for the Humanities, she co-produced and directed, with Cinta Matagolai Kaipat, the documentary film Lieweila, about the Refalawasch (Carolinians) of the Northern Mariana Islands.
WILLIAM FLOOD received his M.D. from the University of Minnesota. He writes a weekly health column and has a private pediatric practice in Saipan.
CONNIE J. ADAMS is a well-known Saipan artist who has won numerous regional and national awards, including the Governor's Award in the Visual Arts.

Overall the book is a great way to learn, or begin to learn, about the islands of the pacific. Although aimed at children it is still useful for readers of all ages.

i thought this was a good book for kids. it has the definition of some of the difficult words on the side of the text and has great art to complement the stories. but for someone from the islands, it was a bit dissappointing in that some of the legends were seriously augmented. granted, there are many versions of the same legends in the islands but not one that is so far from all the rest that they are hardly recognizable, save for the title. but overall, i found the book to be beautifully written and magical.
