From Planet of the Apes to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Jerry Goldsmith has written some of his finest soundtracks for science fiction movies, while his scores for director Paul Verhoven's Total Recall and Basic Instinct have become musical landmarks. Hollow Man is their third collaboration, the main theme being an elegantly icy, sinuous melody carried over understated electronics and romantic strings with clear echoes of Basic Instinct. Building on this, "Isabelle Comes Back" is a six-minute set-piece which grows in understated menace towards the sort of muscular dynamics that characterised such classic late 1970s Goldsmith sci-fi writing as Capricorn One and The Swarm. "Linda and Sebastian" offers the composer's most restrained love theme in some time, the luxurious suspense writing continuing through the middle of the album, before paying off with 20 minutes of strongly crafted action, including the epic "Bloody Floor". "Find Him" is a pulsating masterclass in screen suspense and action, "The Elevator" and "The Big Climb" raising the fusion of percussion, brass and metronomic electronics to fever pitch. The lack of any end title music does mean the album finishes without any musical resolution, but Hollow Man is still, if not great Goldsmith, a decidedly superior score. --Gary S Dalkin
