Jules Massenet wrote more than operas. There's an outstanding piano concerto, as well as six charming "characteristic suites" for orchestra. Each has a different theme, and the titles emphasize the theatrical connection in calling each movement a "scene." When listening you may indeed be reminded of the opera, or even more, the ballet. Even so, these colorful and tuneful scores stand as one of the finest series of purely orchestral works by any 19th-century French composer, and they deserve a much wider exposure among music lovers. If you've had occasion to enjoy Massenet's operas, then you're sure to enjoy these delightful recordings as well.
