カーペンターズのアルバムの中で一番好きなアルバムは と聞かれたら、迷わずこのアルバムを挙げるだろう。ナウ・アンド・ゼンのタイトルにこめられたアルバム・コンセプトは「シング」「ジャンバラヤ」といった明るい側面と「マスカレード」「アイ・キャント・メイク・ミュージック」で聴かれる人恋しい側面を行き来しながら、「イエスタディ・ワンス・モア」で結晶する。振り返れば誰にでもあるほろ苦い過去、甘酸っぱい過去を”昔聞いた音楽”という題材を使ってこれほどまでにうまく表現した歌はないだろう。この歌の後に続くディスク・ジョッキーを混じえたメドレーは、あたかも恋人と行くドライブの情景を彷彿とさせて流れるのだが、これはいうまでもなく「イエスタディ・ワンス・モア」の冒頭で歌われた歌詞の擬似体験にほかならない。アルバム全体を通して感じるのは、カレンの歌のうまさ。こんなことに今更ながら気づく自分が情けないが、情感に富んでいてうまい。最後にリプライズされる「イエスタディ・ワンス・モア」を聞きながら、もはや新たな歌を歌うことのないカレンのことを思うと目頭が熱くなる。

６曲目の「イエスタディ・ワンス・モア」を聴きながら、『ナウ・アンド・ゼン』のアルバム発売からすでに３０年以上たってしまった、という時の流れの残酷さにハッとする思いです。まるで、「イエスタディ・ワンス・モア」の歌詞さながらの思いが脳裏に浮かんできます。

当時日本でもベスト・セラーになったアルバムが、今も尚、若い世代の方に変わりなく支持されているのをみると嬉しく思います。カレンの声は「癒し」の声です。まさしく「ヒーリング・ヴォイス」ですね。

大学へ入学した頃でした。このＬＰを買って、毎日本当によく聴いたものです。「シング」から「マスカレード」「ヘザー」に続く曲順までインプットされています。
「この世の果てまで」や「ジョニー・エンジェル」を聴きますと、３０年前でもすでにオールディーズとして聴かれていた音楽が、さらに懐かしさをまして帰ってきました。

音楽は、時代の空気を感じさせてくれます。私のように、リアルタイムでカーペンターズを聴きつづけてきた者にとって、このＣＤは当時の思い出を蘇らせてくれるものでした。青春特有の感受性を持ちながら、世の中を見つめていた頃ですから、尚更です。

テレビのエンディングテーマやＣＭに取り上げられたこともあり、若い世代では新鮮な捉え方をされたようですね。カレン・カーペンターがこの世を去ってから早２０年以上過ぎた頃に。普遍的な音楽の持つ力が時代を超えて、伝わっているのでしょうか。

２１世紀に入っても、時代や世代を越えてカーペンターズの音楽が多くの人々に愛され続けていることに、大きな喜びと驚きを感じずにいられません。

カレンは、「ラヴ・ソング」を歌い続け、世界中の人に愛の尊さを伝えました。「愛」を歌い続けた彼女が、満たされない「愛」を一番感じていたことでしょう。

文句なく、美しくそして楽しいアルバム。いつまでも聞いていたくなる。
オールディーズも楽しいし、オリジナル曲も聞かせます。
ベスト盤などを除いて考えるならばアルバムとしては傑出した出来といえるでしょう。
これほど完成度の高いアルバムは、なかなかありません。お勧めします。
