非線形光学とは、光に対する物質の応答が一次ではなく高次である現象を学ぶ学問である。非線形光学現象によって、物質の様々な解析や加工に新しい手法を取り入れられている。このように非線形光学は近年開拓された新しい学問領域の一つでもある。
この本は非線形光学を学ぶ大学院生のためのテキストである。分光系の研究室ではよく輪読のテキストとして利用されている。内容は光学についての基礎知識が必要であり、式の導出や非線形光学現象の理解が難しいことも多い。他の参考書等も併用して勉強をすすめてもらいたい。

単位系としてSI単位系を採用した点にある。
著者は、先の初版と第2版では電磁気学の単位系としてガウス単位系を採用していた。
これは、ガウス単位系を採用することで磁気系の単位と電流系の単位が対称的となり、
記述が「エレガントになるから」という理由からだ。
しかし現在、非線型光学は論理物理学の一分野から飛び出して、
分光法や光通信、光機能性材料などの幅広い分野で
研究手法として広く応用されている。
そうなると、多くの工学者や技術者にとって、
ガウス単位系による記述は「解りにくい」と敬遠されるだろう。
そこで著者は、本書においてSI単位系の採用を決意した。
これは記述を抜本的に見直し書き換える一大改革であり、
費やされた労力は並大抵のものではなかったであろう。
しかし、SI単位系採用の英断により、
ガウス単位系に慣れ親しんでいない分野の研究者も
量子光学を俯瞰的に分野を眺めることができるようになった。
著者の、SI単位系の採用に深く感謝する次第である。

非線形光学の教科書としてはShen、Yariv、Bloembergen（冠省略）などの良書が古くから知られておりますが、本書はそれらに引けをとらない優れた教科書です。
非線形光学自体が平易ではありませんが、天下り的な記述が少なく、量子光学などと隣接分野の内容もほどよく取り入れられており、しっかりと学ぼうとする人にはよいと思います。
2次の非線形効果が中心で内容が少し古いと感じられた人、もう少し工学的な応用を知りたい人には、この本の後でYarivやAgrawalなどの本へ進まれるとよいでしょう。
