内容紹介

Review
"The photographs are beautiful. But Galella's most singular contribution to the culture is not aesthetic; it's the way he has acted as an avatar for the public's craving to at once elevate stars and force them to our level." --New York Magazine

Review
"No Pictures, published this month by powerHouse Books, is Galella's sixth book and it shows how unpopular his method often made him with some of his subjects. [Sean] Penn is shown spitting on him and [Mick] Jagger sticks up his middle finger."

Review
"In the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, anyone who counted could count on being caught by Galella. Of course, not all liked it. Elizabeth Taylor shunned him; Richard Burton threatened him; Jackie Kennedy sued him; Sean Penn spit on him; and Marlon Brando relieved him of four teeth."

Review
"Somehow, his mostly 60s and 70s shots seem to harken to a more innocent time in the paparazzi field." The New York Post

Book Description
"No Pictures features photo after photo from the 1970s and 80s of hands raised, heads ducked and celebrities rushing past the lens of one of America's first paparazzi. Some, like Robert Redford, Bette Davis, and Elizabeth Taylor, look stunning anyway. Most others are mid-expression, humanized -- Al Pacino, Barbra Streisand, Greta Garbo." Los Angeles Times

Product Description
Ron Galella didnA^’t invent the word paparazzoA^―Italian for a buzzing mosquitoA^―but he certainly personalized it by redefining the relationship between the movie star and the photographer. Now in the business of catching public figures in private moments for more than three decades, the nationA^’s most famous celebrity photojournalist presents the next chapter in his ongoing visual diary of fame, wealth, and success in America. In No Pictures, GalellaA^’s second powerHouse monograph and the follow-up to the 2006 smash hit Disco Years, confrontation takes the forefront. Just as famous today as GalellaA^’s images of a windblown, jeans-wearing Jacqueline Onassis is the legal battle that ensued; in a trial that lasted 26 days and made the cover of Life magazine, Onassis sued Galella and secured a restraining order against him. He has run afoul of Sean Penn, Richard Burton, Marlon Brando, Sam Shepard, and countless other stars, not to mention Studio 54 owner Steve RubellA^―who eventually banned him from the clubA^―and legions of angry bodyguards. No Pictures chronicles these conflicts and GalellaA^’s relentless persistence in the face of it all, even when things got violent (as with Brando, who once landed a punch that broke the photographerA^’s jaw and five of his teeth). Driven by a mad curiosity and a dogged insistence that the lives of celebrities are fair game for one and all, he has continued to take risks and make enemies in service of getting the perfect shot. The stars may shout "No pictures!" but Galella refuses to take no for an answer.

著者について

Much has been written of Ron Galella. Widely regarded as the most famous and most controversial celebrity photographer in the worldhe's been dubbed “Paparazzo Extraordinaire” by Newsweek and “the Godfather of U.S. paparazzi culture” by Vanity FairGalella is clearly willing to take great risks to get the perfect shot. As a result, he has endured two highly publicized court battles with Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis, a broken jaw at the hands of Marlon Brando, and a serious beating by Richard Burton’s bodyguards before being jailed in Cuernavaca, Mexico. But ultimately, it is his passion for the fine art of photography, coupled with a dedicated do-it-yourself approach to his craftfew artists can claim his level of skill in making their own printsthat sees Ron's body of work exhibited at museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in both New York and San Francisco, the Tate Modern in London, and the Helmut Newton Foundation Museum of Photography in Berlin. Ron's passion for photojournalism has also given rise to eight highly acclaimed books including Disco Years, which was honored as Best Photography Book of 2006 by The New York Times, and Smash His Camera, a documentary of his life and career by Oscar- winning director, Leon Gast (When We Were Kings, 1996), that will premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and compete for Best U.S. Documentary.

Tantamount to his recognition here at home, the government of Basilicata graciously honored Ron, whose father, Vincenzo Galella, was born in Muro Lucano, by making him an honorary citizen of the Italian region in 2009. Basilicata also opened Ron Galella: Italian Icons, a traveling exhibit of over 70 of Ron’s photos, at Palazzo Lanfranchi’s Carlo Levi Hall in Matera. In conjunction with the opening, Ron launched his most recent title, Viva l’Italia!a collection of over 225 images of Italian and Italian-American celebrities from Frank Sinatra to Sophia Loren.

A native New Yorker, Ron served as a United States Air Force photographer during the Korean conflict before attending the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, where he earned a degree in Photojournalism.

No Pictures - Another Must Have book. 2009/10/2

A terrific study of seeing the celebs in action when they don't want to be seen or photographed. Another tremendous book from Ron Galella. Also this book really demonstrates how dangerous the life of a paparazzi is.

No captions? 2010/8/14
By J. L LaRegina - (Amazon.com)
形式:ハードカバー
I didn't recognize some of the subjects in photographer Ron Galella's book of celebrity images, NO PICTURES. As no captions accompany the pictures, I thought the editor who should have realized that must have gotten locked in Galella's darkroom. But it turns out the back pages of NO PICTURES have thumbnail versions of the pictures with a brief summary of who Galella's shooting and what happened as he did.

As the title and cover photo of Sean Penn and Madonna indicate, the theme of this book is the famous reacting to Ron Galella and his camera surprising them - and not wanting him to take the picture. Besides being a fine addition to your coffee table, NO PICTURES is a good book if you're a fortune teller, as its many photos of people sticking their hands in front of the camera lens make for a lot of palm reading opportunities.

Maybe celebrity photographers like Ron Galella are insensitive to people's privacy. However, the most compelling NO PICTURES photos show victims of overzealous rent-a-cops who assault them for taking a photograph.

All the pictures are in black and white. Ron Galella is colorful enough.
How to annoy famous people 2011/10/26
By The Spyridon - (Amazon.com)

Excellent paparazzi photography from the guy who haunted all the famous faces in the 70's and 80's.
Especially interesting are all the images around the Studio 54 heyday.
The fact that they are in black and white gives them more of a timeless and classic quality
and they are miles away from today's trash paparazzi photography though they of course used to serve the same
purpose.
