好きでも嫌いでも一度は読んでおくべき,

冷戦下の西側諸国において反共産主義のバイブルとして持ち上げられすぎた感もありますが、それを差し引いても、この作品は良くできています。1984は西洋においてある種の共産主義像を作り上げましたし、この作品中の造語は英語の一般語彙にいくつも取り込まれました。現在においても、英語圏ではこの作品に頻繁に言及されるので、（政治的趣向はどうであれ）文化を学ぶという意味でも、必ず読んでおく必要があるでしょう。読めるのであれば、できれば翻訳より原文が望ましいのはどの本でも同じでしょうが、本書は、上記の文化的理由により、原文で読むメリットが特に大きい本だと思います。

One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read!!,

"Nineteen Eighty-four" is a remarkable book written by George Orwell. Its harsh style creates an authentic picture of a state turned by men themselves into hell where freedom is nonexisted, war is praised, and ignorance is encouraged.People under the control of the party have no freedom exept to kill themselves. If they commit or seem to commit thougtcrime, the Thought Police will get them without fail and they will be vaporized as though the very existance of them had not been existed from the start. The party deletes any records related to the criminals, even the memory of them. George Orwell also has coined new and potent words of warning for us all, such as "Newspeak", "Doublethink", "Big Brother" and "the Thought Police". WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. BIG BROTHER IS WATHING YOU. The messages that the book delivers have not lost its power even today.

オリジナルは執筆が1948年、リリースが1949年。タイトルの『1984年』は執筆された年のアナグラムというのが通説のようだ。今般高校二年生以来の再読をしてみた。再読の一因は村上春樹が『1Q84』でおそらくはこの小説からインスパイアされているに違いない、と考えたことでもある。驚くほどの完成度だ。人間というものの恐ろしさが隅々に満ちている。特に『二重思考』と『ニュースピーク』は恐ろしさの極みと思える。高校生の時には何も分からず紙の上を滑っていただけだったのだろう。今読むと、今のアメリカ、過去のロシア・ドイツ・中国の『支配』と重なり、そのあまりに似通った『ディストピア化』に驚くばかりだ。 私信ではこの作品は20世紀の最高傑作だ。恐るべき作品である。
