The lonesome nightly stroller, the dark side of the big city, and the new electric billboards were all subjects of early 20th-century photographers who tried to capture the special atmosphere of the night. Nearly a century later, as the nine contemporary photographers featured in "Night Scapes" demonstrate, the act of putting everyday architecture and landscapes into a nocturnal light retains its transformative charm.
